Small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read the minds of those around her. She doesn't exactly help her reputation, though, when she falls for Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who has "come out of the coffin" along with many of his undead comrades now that a new synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren't wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie's boss, Sam Merlotte, who carries a torch for her. "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball is behind this series adaptation of best-selling novels by Charlaine Harris.

Critics Consensus

Thanks to a reliable returning cast, some fresh new faces, and sharp direction, True Blood still manages a deft blend of sexy melodrama, satire, campy fun, and horror.

William Thomas Empire Magazine It's still sexy and blood-soaked, but the novelty's worn thin. Rated: 3/5 Nov 1, 2017 Full Review Phillip Maciak Slant Magazine We should be encouraged-and thanks to Shaw's boffo performance, delighted-to see True Blood thinking, even for a moment, about controlling itself. Rated: 3/4 Jun 26, 2011 Full Review Ken Tucker Entertainment Weekly Blood creator Alan Ball knows how to juggle multiple pretty people and knotty, danger-stuffed story lines for the maximum amount of breathless romance and over-the-top action. Rated: B+ Jun 26, 2011 Full Review Bill Chambers Film Freak Central It's all beginning to feel too much like a merry-go-round. Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Charles Webb MTV The structure of the show is based on its season-to-season escalation of the supernatural, but it's also rooted in the escalation of the personal. Just about every character has something to do this season, which is fairly typical for True Blood. Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Mark A. Perigard Boston Herald HBO's True Blood rises from the grave of last year's uneven season, smarter, spookier and sexier than before. Jun 23, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Rowan C True Blood season 4 was not as good as season 3 but I still really like this season. At the end of season 3, Sookie disappears with a fairy and comes back to find out that she had been gone for a year. Eric bought her house because he knew she was still alive, Jason became a deputy, Tara was in New Orleans with her new girlfriend that didn't last and Bill is the king of Louisiana. Bill fears of a new Necromancer in town and he sends Eric to go check it out but the witch Marnie Stonebrook who is played by Fiona Shaw was possessed. Eric had his memories erased and Sookie took care of him while that was happening which led to them both to falling in love with each other because Sookie was in love with the good Eric. Tommy in this season found out that he was a skinwalker, but he later died this season because he was beaten to death by Werewolves. He was killed by Sam's new girlfriends husband Marcus Bozeman who is played by Dan Buran. Later in the season, Jessica breaks up with Hoyt Fortenberry who is played by Jim Parrack. She actually hooks up with Jason and they were together the last episode of the season. Lafayette Reynolds who is played by Nelsan Ellis, realized that he had a special gift where dead people could possess him. Once Marnie took over his body, he ended up killing his boyfriend Jesus Velasquez who is played by Kevin Alejandro. Eric had his memory restored by Sookie and Pam who is played by Kristin Bauer van Straten had her curse removed as well. Jason almost died by being blown up, but Jessica saved him which made them closer. Alcide Herveaux who is played by Joe Manganiello gets a call about a hole in the ground, and we see that Russell Edgington has escaped his confinement. At the end of the season, Bill and Eric team up to kill Nan Flanagan who is played by Jessica Tuck. The very last scene included Debbie who is played by Brit Morgan breaking into Sookies' home and held her at gunpoint. Tara jumps in front of Sookie taking the shotgun bullet for her right in the brain and Sookie ends up tackling Debbie which resulted in Sookie blowing her head off with the shotgun. The show ends with Sookie holding Tara in her arms crying out for help. Overall, not the best villain but there was so much entertainment packed into this season and I hope they continue the seasons being this good as the last 4. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Liz D Amnesiac Eric Northman, may be the best Northman. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Zacharias T This is terrible storytelling. Loved season 1-3 but this one just drops the ball. A bunch of people trapped in a shop for half the season, yay. Idiotic dialogue. Did they replace the writers? It's very off compared to the earlier seasons. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/04/23 Full Review Brady B I love the entire True Blood series. It was some of the best TV I've seen to date! I would watch it again and recommend to any lover of the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review IsMackinac N This series is satanic, and unabashedly so. It really crosses so many lines that it can be called utterly vile. There are better choices, so be nice to yourself and watch something else. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/30/23 Full Review Raakhee N Ghosh! I haven't watched anything as bad as this series and I love vampire stories. I mean if I hate Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse takes the winning podium! Such a selfish, sick character. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
