What to Know

Critics Consensus

Lucy Lawless exudes steely charisma in Xena: Warrior Princess, a swashbuckling actioner that transcends its origin as a spinoff and becomes a fully realized saga in its own right.

Brian Lowry Variety Lawless is convincing in the title role, and the action sequences are cleverly staged, making the budgetary limitations involving a giant cyclops, for example, almost an asset. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Alison Stewart Sydney Morning Herald Young fans of Hercules (and they are legion) will be delighted with this spin-off, but parents of those fans may be less than enthralled. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Mike Duffy Detroit Free Press Xena doesn't yet match Hercules in mixing the comedy and action elements. Rated: 2/4 Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Michael Gaither Santa Cruz Sentinel If you ever needed an excuse to stay inside on a sunny afternoon, this is it. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly It is camp, but it's also sort of good and we're suspicious that they're putting one over on us, so we want to keep an eye on it. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Offers viewers a refreshingly strong and independent lead character who's able to hold her own. TJ M This is the best fantasy tv show ever made. I don’t care what people with boring taste say. Xena Rules!!! Aphrodite doesn’t blow!!!🤣 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review sarah a I love this show so much. Watched it again and again. It's a shame that in the 90s, they couldn't quite go along the lesbian storyline, although it was strongly hinted at in places, but very frustrating, when Xena and Gabrielle keep getting boyfriends. The comedy in this show is light relief. The action sequences are delightfully exaggerated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Xena is one of the best shows I have ever seen. The way they shot Xena as an actual action hero and showcased her strength was phenomenal. The show could be funny, heart wrenching, exciting, musical, scary! It was like an every genre show and you never knew where the next episode was going to go! The greek gods were always fun when they were onscreen, especially Aphrodite! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this show growing up and absolutely loved it! It's not quite the same watching it as an adult, but it still holds a special place in my heart and I would rewatch it any day! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member These elitist 2018 "critics" can talk all the political cobblers they want about "feminist icons", "LGBT undertones" blah blah blah. I actually watched it because it was a fun show with interesting stories and characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
