Brian McGreevy had one of those "only in Hollywood" type of career trajectories. A Pittsburgh boy, he often claimed he walked away from high school in the ninth grade due to "creative differences" with education. Nonetheless, he went on to learn his craft at the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas in Austin. From there, he landed work fairly quickly as a screenwriter, getting his first writing gig in 2007, a week before an enormous writer's strike put his career on hold for months. The aspiring author's next few years consisted of slaving away on screenplays and then going home to work on his first novel, a horror story called Hemlock Grove. Although rejected initially by six publishers and eight agents, the novel was accepted by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2011. The book, a mix of literary allusions to Greek mythology and mystery that presented itself as high gothic horror saw mixed reviews but soon built a huge fan following. He followed up the novel with a graphic novel version before he was approached by Netflix to join their first round of streaming TV series. "Hemlock Grove" (Netflix 2013- ) premiered to somewhat mixed reviews but performed well enough to get an order for a second season. McGreevy worked closely with Netflix on the series as its creative director; he also wrote the majority of the episodes.
