American radio talk show host and activist Curtis Sliwa was born in Canarsie, Brooklyn, into a Catholic family of Polish and Italian descent. He first gained notoriety for the founding of the Guardian Angels, a civilian group dedicated to combating violence in New York City during the late 1970s, as the city experienced a crime wave. Later, in the 1990s, he would start a long and successful career in the radio as a talk show host. It led him to an acting part in the movie "The Siege" (1998), but he was also featured in series such as "America!" (Odyssey, 2000-01), "Damages" (FX, 2006-12) and interviewed for the documentary "Nine Innings From Ground Zero" (HBO, 2004-05).
