Dan Krauss

Filmmaker Dan Krauss produced and directed acclaimed documentary projects like the Oscar-nominated "The Death of Kevin Carter" (2004) and the critically acclaimed "The Kill Team" (2013), while also garnering a reputation as a top cinematographer on such documentary efforts as "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers" (2009). After receiving his master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, Krauss moved into the documentary field, serving as cinematographer and producer on a variety of projects for film and television. He made an auspicious debut as director, producer, cinematographer and writer on the short subject "The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club," about a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from South Africa whose life unraveled as his main subject matter - apartheid - came to an end. The film received two Emmy nominations and an Oscar nod in 2004 and 2006, respectively and established Krauss as a potent new voice in documentary filmmaking. From there, he served as cinematographer, camera operator and occasional producer on a number of significant television documentary projects, including "Nova" (PBS, 1974- ), "P.O.V." (PBS, 1988- ) and "National Geographic Explorer" (Nickelodeon/TBS/CNBC/MSNBC/National Geographic Channel, 1985- ). On the feature documentary front, Krauss was the cinematographer for the Oscar-nominated "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," "Life 2.0" (2010), and "We are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists" (2012). After receiving a 2012 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a fellowship from the Sundance Documentary Institute, Krauss filmed "Inequality for All" (2013), which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He then returned to directing with "The Kill Team" (2013), a powerful documentary about Army specialist Adam Winfield, who attempted to inform the military about rogue murders carried out against Afghan civilians by members of his platoon. The film was named Best Documentary Feature at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and won awards at several other major film festivals.
