Herbert Kenwith had a long and fruitful career as a director, producer, and writer of some of the America's' favorite shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Kenwith began his career in theater, where he was an actor on Broadway and a stage director for six consecutive summers at Princeton University's McCarter Theater. From there he became a New York-based live TV director for CBS, working on shows like the drama "Valiant Lady" and "The Polly Bergen Show." He eventually transitioned, as many had to, to taped television in Hollywood. Quickly he began directing a host of shows, including the medical drama "Marcus Welby, M.D." and the iconic science fiction series "Star Trek." Throughout the 1970s, Kenwith worked behind the scenes on many of the classic TV comedies of the decade, including "Mary Tyler Moore," "Good Times," and "Diff'rent Strokes." He worked sporadically throughout the 1980s, directing one-off episodes of "Gimme a Break!," which starred the ever-sassy Nell Carter, and the Golden Globe winning spin-off of the eponymous movie "Private Benjamin." Kenwith retired from the industry in 1987. He died in Los Angeles in 2008 at the age of 90.
