Michael Beach Nichols built up an expertise in every facet of the filmmaking process, earning credits as director, writer, editor, producer, and cinematographer all within the first few years of his film career. Nichols kicked off his line of work the documentary project "The Man Behind the Curtain" (2010), a project that explored the work and mental illness of scientist Chris McKinstry. Nichols to continue to use the documentary form to home in on interesting and complex subjects, such as in the Peabody Award-winning television series "Brick City" (Sundance Channel 2009-). In both the Ashton Kutcher-produced web series "Bklyn Flex" (2012) his first bona fide feature endeavor, "Flex Is Kings" (2013), Nichols spotlighted the art and culture of Brooklyn subway dancing. Following work on the Robert Redford-produced documentary miniseries "Chicagoland" (Sundance Channel 2014), which looked to hold the titular city under a microscope, Nichols returned again to feature directing. His next project was "Welcome to Leith" (2015), which covered the influence of white supremacist Craig Cobb on a North Dakota small town.
