      Critics Consensus

Alfred Hitchcock's earliest classic -- and his own personal favorite -- deals its flesh-crawling thrills as deftly as its finely shaded characters.

nick s A very good quality production with a lot of attention paid to subtle character interactions. My only criticism was the ending, which felt out of place with the maturity of the direction up to that point. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Steve D Obvious and really straightforward. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Jones J This is not a horrible movie and it's certainly nowhere near Hitchcock's best, but it's…okay. Visually, it sings with beautifully lit scenes and inventive uses of shadows and silhouettes. Teresa Wright also shines in her leading role as Charlie 2.0, remaining engaging and entertaining all throughout, proving an exceptional protagonist. Though early Hitchockian devices are surely there, they lay deeply hidden in this film. If its story, which runs repetitive and sometimes slow, wasn't focused on murder, you wouldn't know without a shadow of a doubt that this is a Hitchcock film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Teddy B Alfred Hitchcock swiftly and confidently leads frenetic performances, clever writing, brooding atmosphere, and a perfectly drawn-out sense of suspense into a film that remains one of his earliest true landmarks in his career and the unique way he approached the art of cinema. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Nathan A The acting in the movie is nothing short of exact and in this sense lends to viewability. The problem is certain scenes in the movie as when the movie Uncle steps off the movie train into visiting it is on the left side of the train and then when he leaves the area on train he gets on the train on the right side and is thrown off the train from the left? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/06/23 Full Review Bill B Not my favorite Hitchcock - in part because it is showing its age. But the story is unique and there are some terrific scenes: Like when Uncle Charlie bounds up the stairs with elation, only to stop and realize he still faces one obstacle ... staring up at him. Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's Hitchcock unleashed... Rated: 5/5 Jan 21, 2022 Full Review Paul Trench London Evening Standard An Alfred Hitchcock picture is something of an event. This one, which runs for an hour and 45 minutes, is an ingenious and unorthodox thriller which is continuously entertaining. May 26, 2021 Full Review Age Staff The Age (Australia) A series of tense dramatic scenes superbly acted by Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright. Apr 10, 2020 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Shadow of a Doubt” is an exceptional thriller built upon a very good story, some pitch-perfect performances, and slick direction. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Walter Chaw Film Freak Central Hitchcock loved eroding moral bedrocks, most gaudily in the form of desecrating national monuments and more stealthily in the form of ineffectual cops, bumbling clergy, and psycho mothers. Rated: 4/4 Jun 10, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Shadow of a Doubt refines the director's most persistent theme down to its essential components: The prevailing notion that something dark lurks underneath the surface of things exists in nearly each Hitchcock film.
