What to Know

Critics Consensus

Happiness is far from a cheerful viewing experience, but its grimly humorous script and fearless performances produce a perversely moving search for humanity within everyday depravity.

Chuck Bowen Slant Magazine Happiness is a caustic, beautiful, funny, tiresome, and brilliant Molotov cocktail. Nate C Other than Splice, this is the only highly acclaimed film I would call genuinely, perversely disgusting. Where I'll give Happiness far credit is the movie was meant to push your boundaries and clearly wanted to go somewhere you just don't go. That doesn't change how wildly gross Happiness is, smart film or not. I learned nothing. Was Kids messed up? Definitely. But it had a message. I'd give it 0 stars if not for some 5/5 acting and, as always, strong work from Solondz. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Isa B Bold. Disturbing. This is such a risqué piece of art. Happiness is unlike anything I've ever seen. Philip Seymour Hoffman was such an amazing talent. He gave his usual outstanding performance in this picture. Dylan Baker delivered a performance that will make your stomach turn and your skin crawl. I certainly don't envy anyone who plays such a disgusting character, but I do admire him and the courage it took to do so. This is what acting is all about. Being someone other than yourself. Well, I'm certain this is the farthest away Mr. Baker has ever gotten from himself as an actor. Brilliant work! The final scene between him and young Justin Elvin is one of the most well acted, uncomfortable scenes in the history of film. Happiness is, without a doubt, a great motion picture. I highly recommend for those who enjoy the unconventional takes in the medium of film. 97/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Ian L You have to be on another level mentally to find any joy or entertainment in this---and I'm a nihilist. I have one rule---don't mess with children, let alone make entertainment out of such depravity. I stay football stadiums away from anything the filmmaker has made since. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Yash B "Happiness" is a completely original movie that is a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. This movie is so aggressively bleak and bizarre, yet also super disturbing and even darkly humorous. It brings some challenging ideas to the forefront, which at the time of its release were controversial, but I think it is certainly worth exploring. The film aims to showcase some really awful characters and how their desires are similar to most human beings in a twisted way. I think the writing in this movie is exceptional and the performances are unforgettable. I do feel the movie goes really far in a lot of ways, but also it makes sense why it wants to push boundaries. Overall, it is a movie that will certainly leave an impact on me and while it is a polarizing watch, I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates risky and bold cinema. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/03/24 Full Review The H weird is not necessarily creative Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review jeanieforever I happened to have read this script years before the film was released, and though I loved it, I could not imagine how it could be made. The fact that it was, and so well, is a testament to Todd Solondz' genius. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
