Critics Consensus

A clever, offbeat romantic comedy, 500 Days of Summer is refreshingly honest and utterly charming.

Deborah Ross The Spectator This is a film which tries so hard to be fresh and different it loses sight of the bigger picture, is just kind of empty somehow, and rather beefs up the 'rom' and the heartache at the expense of the 'com.' Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Ed Koch The Atlantic The principals perform their roles nicely, but there really isn't much for them to do. Undoubtedly, the age gap has influenced my negative response. Jan 17, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online What makes this movie so seamless is the spot-on performances of the two lead actors and the very relatable story of what happens when love--and life--happens. Rated: B+ Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Juan Pablo Russo EscribiendoCine Excellent no matter how you look at it. [Full review in Spanish] Feb 29, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Don’t call this film a romantic comedy, because with that label comes so many bad associations. Instead, call this a slice of romance, with all the potential elation and heartbreak offered therein. Rated: 3/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Kevin Craft PopMatters The thing about (500) Days of Summer is that you could switch the leads and not miss a beat. Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are that good. It's a gem that I've watched repeatedly over the years. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Sophia H Zero zero zero zero zero zero no stars actually negative stars this movie should pay me for watching it sucks sucks sucks so bad sucks horrible awful worst waste of money do not watch for any reason ever Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Brent H While the word "love" has a definitive definition in the dictionary, "to feel deep affection for someone", the emotion itself isn't as absolute. Defining "love" requires an understanding of the word, yet comprehending the feelings it evokes in each person on earth demands considerable insight and intelligence. If you view it at just the surface level, "(500) Days of Summer" is a film with a familiar story: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy tries to get the girl back. If you view it through that lens, it stands on its own as a movie that most of the audience can relate to and walk away entertained. However, if you really examine the characters and take time to acknowledge how they each define "love", you might acquire a deeper awareness of the complexities of romantic love. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, "Tom Hansen", begins the film firmly believing he'll know what love is the instant his definition of the word enters his life. However, we walk alongside "Tom" and watch as his most closely held belief is challenged and, ultimately, changed. Depending on where you are in your life, this movie can be difficult to watch, or it can serve as a catalyst that challenges you to reevaluate your understanding of what love truly means to you. Zooey Deschanel plays the part of Gordon-Levitt's muse so well. Despite the results of their relationship, "Summer Finn" is the person "Tom" needed to come into his life to make him confront his long-held interpretation of what love really means to him. The non-linear approach of showing Tom and Summer's relationship is an effective choice because it allows the audience to see the cracks long before Tom acknowledges them. It also prompts the audience to confront their own understanding of what romantic love means in their lives. I watched this movie not long after it was released in 2009, but I recently went back and watched it with my son. It's a movie that should be required viewing for anyone who isn't sure if they've encountered true love or is trying to navigate their way through their own beliefs on how they define the word. A wonderful film with a soundtrack that is equally brilliant. When more than one song from The Smiths is included on a movie soundtrack, that should tip you off that you're in for a rollercoaster of emotions.
