What to Know

Critics Consensus

Amiable yet less compelling than any road trip movie starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte should be, A Walk in the Woods is ultimately a bit too pedestrian.

Darned if the film didn't ultimately work for me. Mostly, it was the fun of seeing these two veteran actors riff off each other. Go to Full Review

It's not heavy; it's not wildly significant. But A Walk in the Woods has a redemptive tone, a gentle lesson about aging and limitations and never giving up despite any required climb, uphill or otherwise. Go to Full Review

There are a few chuckles along the way, but only the scenery has any real depth. Go to Full Review

Profound is definitely not a word that can be associated with A Walk in the Woods. Go to Full Review

Won't ever be mentioned in the same breath as any of Redford or Nolte's classic films - it's too silly and too obvious - but watching these two charismatic actors onscreen it's not hard to remember what we liked about them in the first place. Go to Full Review

(Redford and Nolte) make tired clichés feel like old friends, taking us on a pleasant stroll through the woods that may not lead anywhere, but we're having such a good time that the destination no longer matters. Go to Full Review

Carrie M @CarrienCrispin Dec 10 Considering the historically brilliant actors in the cast, and the possibility of a beautiful story in amazing settings, this film was surprisingly awful. I kept watching thinking it was going to get better. It had to get better. Then it ended. Badly. I have no experience in filmmaking, but I’m sure I could’ve directed it better myself. See more J D B Nov 27 Highly enjoyable motion picture. 🎆 The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is a 2,168-mile hiking trail stretching from Georgia to Maine, passing through 14 states. You've got to see this film. 🏞️ See more Colin S Nov 10 I love the book which might be why I even made it through this film. I couldn't decide if Robert Redford was playing an uncharismatic author with no social skills or couldn't act and thus came off that way. Something like Grumpy Old Men was better, but there are some laughs (notably Schaal). My biggest issue with the film is it isn't very cohesive. Scenes and supporting cast just show up, often cut in roughly, only to never be seen again. There is kind of a thematic arc about reaching for your goals and reconnecting, but I think the writing didn't help. Redford and Nolte have always been decent actors, but the are maybe a bit old for this. Hard to tell with Nolte, he always looked rough, even when he was young. See more Mar 22 “A walk in the Woods” is a solid film that explores personal challenges in life's third act, rekindling old friendships, and reminiscing over one's life. If you're looking for a story that doesn't necessitate earplugs and allows you to explore life at a nice pace with character development, interspersed with humor, all set in beautiful country, then this movie is perfect for you.
