Audience Member Jesse, you have to go back. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review jesse o You know, I hate to start political but fuck Trump and his entire administration. You are all fucking terrible people doing your damnedest to ruin the United States. The reason I start with this is the fact that the horrible health care bill that the GOP is trying to shove through senate makes it so that people with mental health issues cannot afford access to health care. The Republican party argues that, whenever deadly mass shootings take place, it's a because of that person's mental health and not the relative ease with which a person can acquire deadly firearms. The Republican party's answer to this is to deny these people access to health care. Yes, really. What a bunch of detestable morons, amirite? The reason I start with this is that the lead characters, Sammy, Ray and Josh, are planning a school shooting/bombing ala Columbine in order to get revenge on the people who have bullied them. Josh and Ray are in charge of getting access to firearms while Sammy is building these pipe bombs in order to fuck more people up. Josh and Ray see the bumper stickers on this redneck's truck (he's a junker) and come to the, obvious, conclusion that he's one of these right-wing paranoid rifle owners. They follow him back to his place, call with a fake 'order' to come take away some junk and while he's away, Josh and Ray look for the weapons they need. Let's just say that things don't go exactly as Josh and Ray planned when they find themselves stuck in this redneck's torture chamber. We find out that this guy has been murdering people since the mid-80s, at least as far as we can see, as they have one of the victims' hands holding one of those gigantic cell phones from the 80s. This is where the movie really begins, honestly. I didn't really even bother to read the description on Amazon (I didn't choose this movie), so I thought it was just gonna be the planning of the actual school shooting itself and that's it. Not saying that I was genuinely surprised, but I knew it wasn't just gonna be as easy as they take the guns and leave. I don't know what I can say about this movie when it does finally reveal itself. Part of me was really annoyed. What I mean by that is by some of the visual elements the film wished to employ. The entire look of the torture chamber itself is dirty and grimy, it's just an ugly film, by intention. I can see a lot of people being turned off by that almost right out of the gate. And that's not to mention the nonexistent character development. Well, I mean, Josh, the only character with anything resembling a personality, has an interesting enough arc, I guess. He's a schizophrenic who hears voices. Yes, really. And I thought they would have exploited that for all they could have but, thankfully, they didn't. It's not like Josh was a great character, but at least he had something of a personality. But I digress, the point I'm trying to make is that they tried to implement some Grindhouse-esque glitches/effects to the proceedings that were just more distracting than anything else. I suppose they maybe have been trying to make the film edgier and cooler than it was, but it just didn't work, all it did was made the film look much more like amateur-hour. It worked in Grindhouse, because Tarantino and Rodriguez were trying to capture that 70s exploitation visual style, so it was essential in creating the perfect visual style for their film. In this movie, it's not really essential. It serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. It doesn't make the movie better. It is what it is, but I hated the visual touches here. It's not like the rest of the movie is much better. It's your typical slasher movie, where the teens play keep away from the killer. It's not horrifyingly bad, as I would have expected, but it's not good either. The problem with the movie is that, like in a lot of horror movies, a lot of the tension is derived from the characters behaving like idiots. There are several times when either Josh or Tasha, this cheerleader (who was kidnapped by the killer) that goes to school with Josh, could downright kill the villain, or take a weapon to defend themselves with, and they just don't. This is where the movie gets its tension and it's really fucking lame. Eventually, Josh and Tasha manage to escape while killing the villain. Then the mission is to stop Sammy from setting up the pipe bombs. Josh tells Tasha of his plans with his friends and she leaves distressed. Josh eventually saves the day with minimal casualties (Sammy killed some cops with the bomb). Josh is hailed as a hero and he then gets Tasha to dump her asshole jock boyfriend and go with him. Which I found stupid, to be honest. Tasha knew that Josh was part of the plot to shoot up the school. His group was planning to kill several of her friends. Yes, he ended up 'saving' the day, as it were, but he was also very much part of the plan. The fact that Tasha could just overlook that fact so easily was just poor writing. I do believe Josh was more troubled than he was homicidal, but he still helped plan out this attack. You'd think it'd be a little more difficult for her to just get over that pretty big fact. It is what it is, but it's just another bit of stupidity. With that said, I don't know what to make of this movie. It's better than I expected, but it also contains a great deal of stupidity. The acting isn't much and the gore is 'acceptable', I guess. It certainly could have been a worse movie than it was, but that's not necessarily a glowing recommendation. If you have nothing else to watch and 80 minutes to kill, then this will be fine, but you won't get much of value from it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I have to say...I wasn't a huge fan of it. I gave it 2 1/2 because the gore makeup and effects were nicely done.
