Suzette Smith Bitch Media Kaufman has created a very smart movie, and I ended up liking it for what it was. It is not a heartwarming romp. It is a dense, sneaky movie about narcissism, cruelty, and Lisa's own shy resilience. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Anomalisa is fascinating, and I cannot say I was ever bored by anything that Kaufman and Johnson were choosing to show me. Rated: 3/4 Aug 16, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire By the time Michael and Lisa are up in that hotel room, trying so heroically to say the right thing, the picture has transcended its gimmicks. Apr 27, 2016 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film Anomalisa is one of the most unique animated films I've ever seen, and arguably the most "human" film of the year. Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Examining "Anomalisa" for the romance and humanity is more arduous than liberating for what Kaufman is trying to say about inspiration. Rated: 1/5 Aug 14, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Those who give themselves over to Anomalisa will find a brilliant and profound look through Kaufman's eyes, always a rare and exceptional experience. Oaklee D An interesting stop motion film in theory, upon watching it though I don't think the ideas in the movie work. Now a big issue I have with this film is the main character is a complete jerk, which would be fine if there was some character development as we progressed but there isn't and that makes it hard to like him at all. This film was ok but is definitely not for everyone, Maybe I had high expectations due to everyone raving about this film BUT I honestly don't see the hype. Just because Charlie Kaufman played a huge part in making this film doesn't mean we should blow smoke up his backside. Forgive me for calling a spade a spade but this movie is not all that great. In closing I'm going to say this WITNESSING STOP MOTION CUNNINGLINGUS WAS NOT ON MY 2025 BINGO CARD! YET HERE WE ARE. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Dave S In the animated feature Anomalisa, David Thewlis provides the voice for Michael Stone, a motivational speaker who is experiencing some sort of existential crisis, living in a world where everyone seems to share both the same face and the same voice…until he runs into Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who is unique in all respects. Written and co-directed by the thematically ambitious Charlie Kaufman, Anomalisa is a wonder to watch thanks to the fantastic animation and the consistently interesting set pieces. While it doesn’t offer any answers to the questions it asks about loneliness or depression or the meaning of life, it does serve as a reminder that we are all individuals with our own set of unique life experiences that define who we are. And that’s a good thing to be reminded of from time to time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Jay W "Anomalisa" is an anomaly. It is a R-Rated film that got an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Picture. It isn't a movie made by one of the major animation studios. It wasn't produced by Disney, DreamWorks, Ghibli, Liaka or even Aardman, instead it was funded by KickStarter. It is refreshing to see both a low budget animated film and an animated film that isn't written off as a "Kids' Movie" getting so much critical accolade. I really wanted to love this movie...so, why don't I? The movie hides its low budget in a very clever way. At first, I thought it was distracting that all the characters seemed to have the same face and same voice. I had chalked it up to the fact that the filmmakers simply didn't have the money to make multiples faces for their puppets nor for various voice actors. But, do not be so hasty, give them some credit, there is a reason for these choices, it is deliberate. And the idea of why all the people look and sound that way is intricate to the plot. The idea is creative, and its presentation unique, where the movie falters for me is in the humor, pacing and characters. Humor is very subjective, and this movie has a very dry and very dark sense of humor. Sometimes that can work, but this one may have been a little too real for the jokes to work for me. The main character is also an arrogant self-important jerk. I understand that the character isn't meant to be a likeable protagonist, but it doesn't make it any the less of a chore to watch. The pacing is very slow and mundane. The movie will linger on little things that most stories would cut out. We don't need to see the man talking to the taxi driver, going to the bathroom, trying three times to get his room key to work, ordering room service, all of that could have been cut and the audience wouldn't have missed a thing. It is clear that the movie was at one point a short. The movie only has enough content to cover less than 30 minutes, but it goes for 90 minutes. Also, just because the movie has nudity and profanity, doesn't correlate to it being "mature". I'm not against animation being for adults. I just think that the movie is unnecessarily vulgar and graphic. The movie is unique in many ways and that is good. But just because the movie is different doesn't make it good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review A J Surreal, disturbing, moving, funny. A movie that gets under your skin. Highly recommend it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Blobbo X Ho-hum exercise in stop motion. Graphic gumby sex make for not good family viewing. Not much to show for so much work. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Carlos F buena animación stop motion, con un concepto realmente interesante e incomodo. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
