Wanda Hale New York Daily News As it was in Pather Panchali, the acting is sensitive, restrained and convincing. Rated: 5/5 Aug 7, 2012 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Ray's relaxed, open style had a tremendous influence on the film world of 1956, but time has absorbed some of its originality. Oct 24, 2007 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk In simple, lyrical shots, Ray conveys the enormity of living in a large, crowded city without losing sight of the simple beauties to be found all around. Priyan B An masterpiece must watch drama better than the prequel. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review John W Beautiful second film in the Apu Trilogy. Not quite as indelibly memorable as "Pather Panchali" and "The World of Apu," but still one of the greatest movies ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Dani G A marvelous continuation of where Pather Panchali left, transferring the lead of the story to the character of Apu Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review s r 1001 movies to see before you die. A meditative piece on life in India and is part two of three. It told the story of a boy growing up and losing his parents, but still sticking to his ambition. It was well made. Saw it on TCM. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member More interesting than Pather Panchali. This is again a very sombre film but we see Apu starting to make his own way in an increasingly big world that he inhabits. A reasonable watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review William L Aparajito is a film about growth and change, especially seen in the context of the first film in the Apu trilogy, Pather Panchali; the Roy family moves from the idyllic, if somewhat primitive, rural setting that Apu grew up in to the more chaotic, active lifestyle of the city, but while Apu gains access to education and knowledge that none in his family had before been exposed to, it is not a rosy experience, and eventually claims the life of his father. Later, Apu's familiarization with urban life causes a rift as his visits to his mother, now returned to a village, become increasingly seldom and cause her to feel abandoned and to fall physically ill with how detached the pair have ended up, ending with her following her husband to an early grave. Like many great dramas, Aparajito incorporates the peculiarities of its own culture while maintaining universal truths as well - the separation of parent and child as the latter grows and becomes more independent is an inevitability in virtually all cultures, but is here used by Ray to mirror the emerging modernization of India, embracing greater technical competency but often at the expense of some of the more traditional (or pastoral) elements of domestic society that had been in place for centuries, a transition that he makes clear would not be without pain. A more than worthy follow-up to Ray's original classic of early Indian film that dove into the experience of Indian life and culture, and brought it to screen; the improvements in technical competency compared to the original are notable, despite the relatively short amount of time elapsed between the two.
