Matthew Roe Film Threat There aren’t any character dynamics or technical expertise at play that haven’t been used elsewhere, but this particular mash of ingredients has fermented and distilled into a concoction as sharp and disarming as moonshine in the character’s mason jars. shivani p Some films shout. This one hums, a low, aching tune carried on the wind between two people who no longer speak the same language. Appalachian Dog is set in the shadow of a war no one won, not on the battlefield, but in the home. A tailor and a seamstress try to sew their life back together, but the fabric won’t hold. It puckers. It frays. And watching it all, with muddy paws and unblinking eyes, is a dog who seems to know too much. I just wanted to let you know that nothing here is spelled out. The story hangs like fog in the holler - thick, quiet, hard to shake. Grief and love tangle like thread in a trembling hand. The dog doesn’t save them. He simply stays. And sometimes, that’s enough. You don’t watch Appalachian Dog to be entertained. You watch it to remember something you forgot you lost. A marriage. A memory. A mutt. And in the silence between them, something beautiful. In the end, it's a must-watch movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Laraib A Really beautiful indie film. Appalachian Dog pulled me in from the very first scene. The cinematography is stunning, and the performances feel raw and real—especially Colin Henning, who not only acted but also wrote and directed the film. The story is quiet but powerful, about a man returning from war to find that home isn’t what it used to be. It’s emotional, unpredictable, and full of tension in even the smallest moments. The sound design and editing really add to the atmosphere. It’s one of those films that sticks with you. Definitely recommend if you’re into slow-burn, character-driven stories with depth. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Isaac W I met these filmmakers at a few festivals, they are lovely humans and I was very impressed with this slow burn gothic period piece! Great acting, and cinematography! Keep an eye out for these filmmakers, I definitely am! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Audience Member The actors were mismatched for the caracter's roles. The husband sure didn't act or look like he had been to war. The homes were definitely not owned by struggling, poor, under-educated Appalachian people. This movie seems to have an agenda and it is anything but representing Appalachian folks in 1946. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Kelly G Unpredictable, Captivating Story, Beautifully Shot. Where to begin? First, the story is captivating, the acting superb, and the cinematography breathtaking. The film was written and directed by Colin Henning. Henning also starred in the film, along with Georgia Morgan, Hayleigh Hart Franklin, and Brooke Elizabeth. From the first scene of the movie, I found myself transported back to a simpler time in beautiful 1946 Appalachia. The setting of this movie is gorgeous. The story is about a man who returns from war to find that life back home has moved on without him, and he must determine if there is still a place for him. The path the storyline takes is unexpected at times, yet believable and compelling. I felt myself holding my breath at times because of the tension in even the most ordinary situations - thanks to the editing and sound; the droning of the wind, the crashing of the river - it was all very unsettling and suspenseful. I highly recommend this film if you're looking for something intense and unexpected! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review BJ H I watched Appalachian Dog over the weekend after purchasing it on Amazon Prime, and I was thoroughly impressed. Not only were the performances outstanding, but the film was beautifully shot and edited. Colin Henning—director, writer, and star of the film—masterfully captures the raw emotions of characters struggling to adjust to life in a post-war world. Georgia Morgan, Hayleigh Hart Franklin, and Brooke Elizabeth round out the principal cast, each delivering a standout performance. Excited to see what’s next from the rising production company, C.H. Squared Films! The film is also available on several streaming platforms, including Tubi (which is free)! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
