Gail Osborne is a 16 year old who starts dating Steve Pastorinis who goes to the same school as her. It's also around this time that she starts to receive abusive notes stuck in the grills of her school locker and also abusive telephone calls. For a film, let alone a TV movie to deal with an issue such as stalking in 1978 was very brave indeed as it hadn't entered the public consciousness yet and was largely an alien concept. But Are You In The House Alone? deals with the subject very intelligently and exposes it for the vile, terrifying and horrific practice that it actually is. But the movie also deals with other issues such as Gail's parents struggling with their marriage following her father losing his job. This again is dealt with brilliantly and feels integral to the plot rather than just feeling like padding to fill up the running time. But Are You In The House Alone? also deals with rape, another taboo topic for 1978. It deals with it amazingly well with discussions regarding getting the rapist to court and obtaining a conviction against him being seen as being very difficult indeed. I love doing 31 Days of Halloween as it's a great chance to revisit horror films that I have seen in the past but also to watch films that are completely new to me. Some of these I'm really glad I took the time to watch. A small minority bowl me over as they are just so powerful and brilliant. Are You In The House Alone? is one such film. When it ended I literally had to just sit and digest what I had just experienced and think about just how trailblazing the production was especially for that time and for the topics it depicted without any sugar coating or saccharine gloss. Are You In The House Alone? is a very unsettling experience as it worms it's way into your head and will stay with you long after it has finished. And it's a rare instance of a TV movie rightly finding it's way onto Blu Ray (thank you Vinegar Syndrome!)

It's not the horror/thriller that the title or ads suggest, and as a TV movie from the 70s it's pretty melodramatic and corny at times, but for dealing with the subject matter of rape soo candidly, it deserves some praise.

Feels like an after school special, but I kind of like them, so I enjoyed this movie (if enjoyed is the right word for a movie about stalking and rape). Interesting 70's era movie. My favorite was the very dramatic English teacher.

I can't tell anyone. They won't believe me. Gail is a high school teenager that routinely goes on double dates with her best friend that leads to her making out for a long time with her high school crush. However, she never wants to take it the distance and have sex. She begins getting plagued by crank calls that no one takes seriously; however, as the calls continue, it becomes more apparent her caller is on his way to her house... "I am getting closer." Walter Grauman, director of Nightmare on the 13th Floor, Outrage, Covenant, Cover Up, The Untouchables (1959), 633 Squadron, and Pleasure Palace, delivers Are you in the House Alone. The storyline for this picture is actually fairly interesting and unfolds well. The acting is solid and believable and the few thriller scenes are dramatic. The cast delivers solid performances and includes Dennis Quaid, Blythe Danner, Tony Bill, Robin Mattson, Alan Fudge, and Ellen Travolta. "I want you to have it all!" I came across this movie on Netflix and had to add it to my queue (I honestly thought I had already seen it but I hadn't). This was fairly good as I liked the characters and how they were presented. This wasn't particularly intense, but it unfolds well and I liked how it concluded. This is definitely worth a viewing. "He raped me!" Grade: C+

Okay, so I went into this expecting a horror slasher or something of that nature, not a made for TV rape drama, so I may've judged the film more harshly than necessary, but it just wasn't what I was looking for. Rental, at best.

Are You in the House Alone? is a made-for-TV movie from 1978 about a young girl who is raped and it's up to her to admit who raped her. To be honest, going into this, I thought it was going to be a horror movie of sorts. The fact that it has the title that it does AND it was recently released on Shout! Factory's Scream Factory label made me believe that I was in for a slasher or even a thriller. In the end, it's neither of those things. For a TV movie, it's not that bad, but it's not altogether good either. Some of the dialogue is pretty laughable and some of the performances aren't very good. I can't overlook it entirely, but once you've seen it, chances are good that you won't want to see it again. So yes, I was disappointed by what I was expecting from this one and what I eventually got, but nevermind.

Synopsis

In this made-for-TV adaptation of the Richard Peck novel, Anne (Blythe Danner) and Neil Osborne (Tony Bill) have moved to a new town with their virginal teenage daughter, Gail (Kathleen Beller), after being burglarized. When Gail finds a mysterious, threatening note, she assumes it's just a prank. But when more letters arrive -- along with increasingly frightening phone calls -- she realizes she has a stalker and sets out to use her photography skills to catch him in the act.
