Critics Consensus

Beautiful to look at but narratively hollow, Autómata short-circuits its handful of intriguing ideas with an overload of sci-fi clichés.

Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times Visually inspired but thematically derivative, the apocalyptic sci-fi drama "Automata" pits humans against robots with predictable results. Oct 10, 2014 Full Review Odie Henderson RogerEbert.com Personally, if I were you, I'd bypass it for a double feature of "Cherry 2000" and "Runaway." Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 10, 2014 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times One gets the feeling of witnessing some kind of primordial origin story about parallel destinies for the human race and the intelligent machines we make. Rated: 3/4 Oct 9, 2014 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There are a host of clever ideas and interesting concepts that the film plays with, but it never sees any of them through. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Leo Brady AMovieGuy.com Even though this is much like past sci-fi films, Automata works here and has a great respect for the genre it is in. Matt V It’s not perfect, but it’s still very good. Looks amazing, good acting, the robots are wonderful. It’s not really like anything else. I’m a fan of it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Nick L It's a different take on AI powered robots. I don't understand why the self-proclaimed critics of movies gave it a low rating; maybe because they were expecting an action-filled The Matrix look-alike, but this movie is different rather focusing on the deep implications of human relationships to machines that seem to be "necessary" for technological advancement and survival. It's a scary perspective the one presented in this movie, but a possible one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Martin C I was impressed that it uses older actors for all roles. It is quite appropriate as the weight of experience presses down on many of their actions and goes a long way to explain their otherwise harsh decisions. Many hundreds of words of tedious interactions so needed in other films to explain this can be avoided. No tedious attempts of a young immature actor attempting to empathise with a machine: so no Data (Star Trek). None of the teenage tantrums and angst and impulsiveness which has weakened so many movies such as the later Star Trek movies. Nor any need to suspend belief when once again a young hero has to have more experience or just luck than all others. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Audrey V I thought it was great. Little slow in parts, but Antonio is always great. And seeing him act with his ex-wife, Melanie Griffith was fab!!! Not everything has to be filled with explosive scenes and non-stop action. I found the pace of the story quite realistic without being overly CGI. I do so despise most cgi, and for a low budget movie, with Antonio Bandaras, if you like a good post apocalyptic, sci-fi movie, I think you shall enjoy it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Korra N Incredible visual & practical effects paired with some great performances don't save a bland script and uninspired direction, but Automata is still worth checking out if you're a fan of dystopian thrillers. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Theo S Although the beginning looked somewhat promising I could never fully understand what was going on throughout the film. The story never came together leaving an unsatisfying ending to an overall bad movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
