Jonathan K What I especially love about these films is that the conversations, the little flare-ups, the bigger fights… they all feel painfully familiar, like versions of arguments we've all wandered into. Their uncanny acting always impresses me. Not in a showy way, but in the sense of so much preparation without feeling forced or scripted even though it isn't ad-libbed. They're just good. The opening shot, something like a 15-min oner, is so skillful in maintaining the natural ease. Even so, this one didn't hit me in the feels like the previous two. It’s lighter, maybe even funnier than I remember the others being, but not as emotionally heavy. Still, the craft is there from start to finish, and I'm always in for a "Before". Richard Linklater makes his third film in the Before series with Before Midnight, a movie that follows Celine and Jesse into marriage and post parent life. Its an interesting movie, but, one that feels very different from Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Its a movie that is real just like the first two films, but, is real and raw in the pain and anger that a married couple might have. As a huge fan of the first two films, it was a little disappointing to see the two characters fighting and bickering for much of the movie. Its a darker film than the first two movies, focusing on conflict and marital issues. As a hopeless romantic, I really wanted to see a movie of the two happily married and just enjoying a trip in southern Europe. But it ends up being an uncomfortable watch. Mind you though, the movie is still awesome, but it pales in comparison to the first two in my opinion. Its the most emotional film in the trilogy, in terms of the heat of the anger shown on screen. If you loved the first two films, you might not like this movie. But, its still a great time seeing these two amazing characters back in a story.
