      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

How do you fight an idea? By filming a remake that has too few of its own, and tries to cover it up with choppy editing and CGI.

Caleb M I really enjoyed it, not sure why it had such bad reviews Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Georgan G I hated the animal cruelty in the 1959 version, but this entire film is poorly done. Terribly script with filming that is boring. The sound is so uneven I could not hear dialogue, then blasted with music or yelling. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Claudiu I The narrator is very annoying, telling obvious things at the end and stupid things at the beginning. Not very believable story and some scenes are exaggerated. The relation of Ben Hur with his wife is absurd in few scenes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Brianna B This movie is an absolute joke Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Christine K Having never watched the original, this is now an all time favourite movie of mine. The story is just so good and touching and makes you want to forgive others. I feel so touched. Sure there are historical inaccuracies but we give them artistic license.

Jordan Hoffman Times of Israel The movie isn't really saying anything, and is just cruising on the fumes left over from our associations with a classic. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Kristen Lopez Spectrum Culture Ben-Hur isn't the worst film of the year, but from a technical standpoint it certainly looks it. Rated: 1.5/5 Nov 20, 2017 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer Very rarely does it try to impress us, or overwhelm us, shock us, move us. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The decision to film the major set-pieces in extreme close-up was ill-advised, and these murky and incoherent bits are further crippled by obvious CGI as well as rapid-fire editing that recalls those Ginsu blades in action on late-night infomercials. Rated: 2/4 Aug 18, 2021 Full Review Tori Brazier One Room With A View Remaking the classic Hollywood epic and 11-time Oscar winner Ben-Hur seems redundant - so 2016's Ben-Hur starts on the back foot. Rated: 3/5 Mar 25, 2021 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin It glosses over familiar scenes and motifs, going through the same old routine without bringing anything new to the table.
