Andy F A pretty good Voodoo film and like many films from the 30s quite disturbing in places. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't get me wrong, it's a really good film - Fay Wray, luminous as ever; Fat Jack Holt as our hero; but we establish our 1930s racism from the go: Dorothy Burgess banging native drums because she was one of only two whites on an island of blacks; now they want her back! "The natives are restless". Sacrifice, voodoo, black magic, the islanders labelled 'monkey chasers', It just keeps playing on white people's fear of the black man... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member bizarre but interesting B horror pic Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member this is like a more racist cousin of tourneur's classic 'i walked with a zombie'. dorothy burgess is haunted by the drums of her island home because she was initiated into a voodoo cult as a young child. at one point it looked like she might lead a revolution against her own family, the only white people on the island. i hoped for this outcome but all in vain. cheesy but entertaining i guess Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Nice Columbia Horror Flick--Intriguing obscurity!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review bill t Completely ridiculous tale of a woman being totally transfixed by da voodoo drums! She insists on going back to the natives (or, the "blacks", one of many, many racial stereotypes this film has to offer) to hear the beats again! Her husband, child and her nanny accompany her, but will it be too late to save her? Plenty of tastelessness abounds, especially the end, huzzah for child sacrifice!
