Critics Consensus

Full of creepy campfire scares, mock-doc The Blair Witch Project keeps audiences in the dark about its titular villain, proving once more that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.

Brian A The best found footage horror movie ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Aaron B yep.. still terrifying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Alejandra C it was a hyped movie and it lived up to it. Now its just ok but its a film you should watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Phantom 9 I don't understand why they didn't add jumpscares. The movie began strong, creating a creepy and tense feeling that kept me nervous from the first scene. The use of the woods, the handheld camera style, and how the story unfolded made it seem almost real, which I really liked. The acting was surprisingly good, especially since it was improvised there was a rawness to the performances that made the fear feel real. However, by the end, I was quite let down. After building all that suspense, I wanted more real horror, like seeing the witch actively scaring them or having a big showdown. Instead, it felt like the tension disappeared, leaving me more frustrated than scared. I understand that the movie aimed for quiet psychological terror instead of obvious scares, but I still wished for at least a few real jumpscares or more visible dangers. Overall, I appreciate the skill and how it influenced the found-footage genre, but emotionally, it left me wanting much more intensity in the ending. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Lee C The Blair Witch Project certainly has sort of a tense atmosphere but in my opinion wasn't as scary as people describe it. Overall I would still recommend it though I found the ending a bit disappointing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Krysta M If you were around when this movie came out like I was I think you have a completely different understanding of why it's a horror classic. It was a phenomenon when it came out. I saw it opened weekend, before the complaints of shaky cam and I STILL remember the feeling of terror i had at the final scene. I don't scare easily but I was totally immersed in the film. No one had done found footage before that point. It was original and it relied totally on the audience imagining what might be there instead of showing them. Upon rewatching as I do over the years, is Heather annoying? Yes, is the shaky cam a lot? Yes, but it's simple, well done horror that spawned a sub genre that continues to this day. Some of it good, some bad, but when it's done right, found footage horror can be great. The Blair Witch Project is one of the greats. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
