Joe Clay Times (UK) So convincing was this clever, chilling fake documentary that Donahue’s mother received sympathy cards from people who believed that her daughter was actually dead or missing. Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal The scariest shots, from someone's little Hi-8 camcorder, document the students losing their bearings, giving way to panic and finally falling victim, though off screen, to some ineffably, unphotographably evil presence. Dec 13, 2014 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com Whenever night falls, the movie takes off, but in a slow creep, with all your childhood fears of the dark suddenly revealing themselves as absolutely reasonable. Sep 29, 2014 Full Review John Brhel Vague Visages The Blair Witch Project isn’t a horror film experience on par with ‘The Exorcist’ or ‘The Shining,’ but that’s not a fair comparison. It’s an experience all its own. Jun 5, 2023 Full Review Christopher Borrelli Toledo Blade [The Blair Witch Project is] the most effective and unsettling horror movie in quite a long time. Just to clarify: after seeing this, you will not sleep well. Invest in a night-light. Rated: 4/4 Dec 15, 2022 Full Review Peter Terzian Out Magazine The intimacy of video and the believability of the three students close the gap between film and viewer, truly allowing us to suspend disbelief, something horror films seldom do. Aaron B yep.. still terrifying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Jonathan C All these years later, it is still the worst movie I have ever seen, and I STILL want my money and time back. Can I give it negative stars? Dreck. When the highlights are twigs, snot, or a guy standing in a corner, you know you've entered Sh!tland. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Marios C Everything about it was clever and ahead of its time . Starting from the marketing campaign. Yes, I really wanted it to be a real story. Then the found footage. A new concept at the time. It worked. It gave you a sense of unease. Then the plot and the characters. The acting was surprisingly good and Heather Donohue's character was so annoying, you wanted to slap her good and hard. Then came the scene where she was crying in front of the camera and we felt for her. And all of a sudden the audience started to like her. Then the weird ending. What actually happened? I came out of the cinema thinking. Yeah. Finally something different. A must see. A horror classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Stacey L Twenty some years later, I still don't see what the fuss was about, other than the "critics" and media kept fawning over it being a low budget film making it big in Hollywood. Its okay to take a pass on this, you are not missing anything other than screaming in dark woods and shaky handheld camera footage. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review David R I removed a star because it wasn't scary in the slightest. I've seen scarier things in a kids show. It was just a bunch of screaming and people not knowing where the map is. Someone call Dora. I still like the realism to it even though, like I said, it ain't scary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Jason B I saw this during its original theatrical run and finally re-watched it again a few months ago. I have to say it still really holds up and it's probably the best found footage film that's been made with a couple others coming in at a close 2nd. The use of people who didn't really act much, if at all, makes it that much better. When people try to act but look totally natural as if not acting is almost never believable. For those who weren't old enough or didn't pay attention much at the time, the release of The Blair Witch Project was genuinely confusing to people because it looked completely real, like a documentary, but was presented as a horror movie. It seemed implausible that they could use this footage if it was authentic but even after seeing it I was on the fence. That was a special time because that was a once in a century event that cannot be recreated as the genre has been exploited repeatedly since, to mixed affect.
