Critics Consensus

A passion project for Elliot Page that benefits from his naturalism, Close to You's improvisational scripting yields dramatically uneven but ultimately moving results.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) There is an erratic quality to how much of it connects and flows. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Helen O'Hara Time Out Director and star conceived the story and then the cast largely improvised the dialogue that drives it along. Sometimes that results in meandering or overblown moments, but the general thrust is powerful enough to carry it along. Rated: 3/5 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Ella Kemp Empire Magazine Page shines bright in an otherwise formulaic story, but this is still a thoughtful, sensitive portrait of a young man coming to terms with his sense of self and the love he deserves. Rated: 3/5 Sep 5, 2024 Full Review Emily Wheeler Emily Wheeler Movie Ops Structurally and stylistically it’s not very good, and yet it still manages to get across some hard truths. Jul 5, 2025 Full Review Rick Burin iNews.co.uk While Close to You is transparently imperfect, it is a sincere joy to have its gifted lead back on the big screen. Rated: 3/5 Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens An introspective grey film that can’t get its pace up beyond a laboured stroll, Page might give a perfectly authentic performance, but his self-written script gives him very little to actually do. Yolanda Most underrated movie of the year! Truely excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Ali N The romance in this film is way, way too unrealistic. I'm sorry for you romantics out there like me who always root for love even when it's unrealistic, but since this film is trying to capture real life there is no way in a million years that a rich bisexual woman is going to leave her decent, good looking husband, underage kids, and a very nice home and nice, wealthy, safe life in general for a poor transman who lives with a roommate. So that pulled me out of the film. Also frustrating how the day with the family ended so suddenly for no good reason really. His parents were trying so hard to accept him and have him be a part of the family, but instead he acted like a spoiled brat and just left without saying thanks for trying or even a good bye. Doing improve might have been fun for the actors but it wasn't fun for the audience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Kyle M Compelling showcase for Elliot Page that feels triumphant over his natural, personally experienced edge to solidify the improvised commentary, which the atmosphere feels ideally awkward and yielded till the erupted drama implies unseen possibility left unsatisfyingly unresolved. That may be intended, if so then the rest of the culminated energy is considerably uneven, but that could be conflicting when viewing this inexperienced or uninvolved enough to properly grasp. Simply put, Page’s may have independently found emotional bliss in his passion project, it’s the story that’s incomplete amidst misled direction. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Carolyn S I’m so glad I was patient with this film. In the end, I found it poignant and several performances, especially Page, Baack, and Crewson, were deep and layered. This isn’t a perfect film. The beginning was the most challenging for me, not so much because of slow pacing, but because the film felt unsure of itself and a bit awkward. Like it was a documentary. By the end, I was in tears and so appreciative of the journey. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Paul B Totally Boring. About a subject I could care less about. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Jamie A This film is unusual in style and pace, which might initially be off-putting to some viewers. However, it's naturalistic approach makes it profoundly relatable, especially for those of us who have experienced things not-so-different than Page's character. For those who can resonate with those experiences, this film will be an affirming of the struggles and the hope. For those who cannot, it is an opportunity to empathize and understand in a new and beautiful way. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
