directed by Sébastien Rose
starring Paul Ahmarani, Micheline Lanctôt, Lucie Laurier

Pretentious, erotic, uneven, its definately French-Canadian, well its everything French-Canadian cinema used to be like, but it was made in the years 2000.
Comment ma mère... or How my Mother Gave Birth to me During Menopause is about a 30-something writing a thesis about men's obssession with women. His problem was to grow up in a world of women, raised by his mom and his sister and became the perfect lover. He cant help but have sex with every women he meets, until Cassandre comes into his life, he falls in love with her. Obviously, his mom, a very unlikeable, snobish and annoying character will not like the new young lady, until she gets pregnant and our hero feels the need to run away, just like his father did when he was a kid.
Sébastien Rose is a writing teacher's son, must be why his films sounds like it came right out of the 80's. He might even be Denys Arcand's spiritual son, his second feature La vie avec mon père, realesed two years after this one, will prove it. His dialogues are very reminescent of Arcand and even the themes, in some way. Like Arcand, Rose give a lighter tone to his film with a lot of comedic moment and even some hilarious scenes. Still, he is a first-time director and the flaws are bold and annoying.
The acting is pretty good. Paul Ahmarani, with all his charisma, manages to make his character ambiguous even when we dont agree with his way of thinking or his actions, probably cause we know its a direct consequences of being raised by his bitch mother. Micheline Lanctôt is the mom in question. Weird casting Id say, she is good, but with her manly voice I never managed to understand how it was possible to portray her as a sexy character. Sylvie Moreau as the sister is amazing as usual. Lucie Laurier looks good in a thong and Patrick Huard does a good Patrick Huard job.
With so much ambitions for a first film we cant call Comment ma mère ... a failure even when some scenes dont work at all, cause its kind of well-written and never loses its point. The final scene actually make up for all the flaws, very well-acted and fun as well. Its actually a pretty good film, but Im sure Sébastien Rose can do much better, well he has done it already.
