Howard Thompson New York Times The best science-fiction thriller this year. Mar 5, 2020 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Crack in the World [is] distinguished principally by some startling special effects. Oct 16, 2008 Full Review David Pirie Time Out The theme often seems awesomely credible and the special effects are excellent, although the usual character conflicts in the scientific team become trying at times. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews An engaging B film doomsday scenario sci-fi drama, one with a great menacing premise. Jack S In a bid to release an inexhaustible energy supply, a terminally ill scientist resorts to the use of atomic weapons deep underground, with catastrophic consequences. The scientist (Andrews, typically solid here) is a perfectly believable and complex character who, naturally concerned with his own mortality, jumps the gun in a risky experiment—the main goal of which turns out to be to preserve his personal legacy, as well as impress his pretty, young wife. Unfortunately, the second half has Moore and Scott running out the clock fleeing various volcanoes/earthquakes in one often senseless (and not particularly suspenseful) scene after another. Although the finale is an intriguing idea, sad to say, it’s only weakly executed. The “special effects” such as they are, are mostly stock footage of atomic explosions, lava flows etc. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Ronnie M Great 1960's style Sci Fi. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/23 Full Review bill t I was all ready to dismiss this one based on my unfamiliarity with the title, but BOY, does this provide a lot of suspense mixed in with the science hookum that doesnt make a lot of sense to give us some solid entertainment. If you're interested in disaster films, I'd definitiely look this one up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Why the hate by the user community on this one? While not a classic by any means, it is entertaining and fun to watch. The science is of course questionable, but acting by Dana Andrews, Janette Scott and Kieron Moore is more than satisfactory. The special effects are not bad for its time so I rate this a 7/10. Great if you are in the mood for old-fashioned science fiction action as a Saturday matinee in your home theatre. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrifically entertaining, and surprising seriously minded, sci-fi disaster movie in which a project to bring energy up from the earth's core goes terribly wrong, and a crack in the earths crust starts to spread!! Great special effects and a few memorable scenes make this one of the best 60's sci-fi adventures. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review delysid d americans think they own the whole world and will do anything for money, who cares how many die or what happens to the environment. then when they fix some of the problems that they themselves have caused, they think they are big heros!
