What to Know

Critics Consensus

It never lives up to the first part of its title, but Crazy, Stupid, Love's unabashed sweetness -- and its terrifically talented cast -- more than make up for its flaws.

Kate Erbland Film School Rejects Despite some shaky plotting, the Carell and Gosling duo is an engaging watch and the two have their own special brand of chemistry that keeps the film going, even when things feel just ludicrous enough to be distracting. Rated: B- Sep 23, 2019 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The acting is universally excellent, and during the majority of the film's running time what's taking place is almost too glorious for words. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 27, 2012 Full Review Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) Steve Carell sets aside his goofball schtick for a more earthy role in this satisfying, mature ensemble romantic dramedy. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 18, 2011 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson It's incredibly fresh, funny, emotional, daring, and, for a romantic "dramedy," has more jaw-dropping twists than big budget thrillers. Rated: 5/5 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Patricia Karounos Refinery29 Crazy, Stupid, Love isn't just about one couple; rather, it's an exploration about the nature of dating, coming together, and relationship expiration dates in general. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review What I like best about Crazy, Stupid, Love. is the structure, and how seemingly frivolous subplots come together and inform the others in crucial ways during a hilarious screwball climax. Blu B A Romcom Classic. The acting is first rate and the strongest asset this has going. Great chemistry, really solid humor that's clever and well thought out, and strong character development amongst the two male leads. Carroll is the best thing here and gives an excellent performance. Tomei is really funny to and I wish she had more time. There is an occasional clunky/cheesy line here and there but it's first rate overall. Everything else is really well done. It basically follows several romances that are interwined and demonstrate how like the title suggests how funny, ludacris, and touching love can be. This film has a lot of sincerity to it also suprisingly. The direction is really good too, and especially the lighting. The bar reminds sometimes of Rick's Cafe in Casablanca feeling very intimate. It does a really good job weaving between each of the romances and making them work without feeling jumpy. Even when it does jump around a bit between Stone/Gosling and the teen romances it's able to get away with it because it's suprisngly conssitently funny. It helps A LOT. I will say sometimes it's a bit too cheesy/sincere. The end speech with Carroll is kind of farfetched, cliche, and I wasn't the biggest fan of it. It feels out of place kind of and kind of kills a lot of momentum. Also some storylines are more devleoped and interesting than others. Moore's character gets a lot fo development but it feels like her arc doesn't really go anywhere at the same time also. And even though there is some lazy wirting and plot conviences in this, it does get away with it for being a comedy that's funny. I think it thinks it's being smart when it reveals the twists but there is quite a few here that kind of push it a bit. Overall it's really well done though, funny, and heartfelt. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the directors, comedies or romances should check this out. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Kirstie S HOW has this film, at the time of writing, only for a 78% audience score?! It’s brilliant! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Victoria O I enjoy the film on a basic level. The themes, thoughts and emotions it evokes on a base level are interesting. I feel the script writing was poor however. The acting is great and they appear to just be working with what they got. And it shows. I don’t like the Emily (Cals wife). Some scenes where she gets angry annoyed about the fact that Cal is sleeping around to get over her especially considering she said she wants a divorce annoy me. And she comment on it after the PTA with the teacher. About how “because I cheated first I can’t be angry”. Yes. It’s not an excuse by all means. But you are literally planning to divorce this man. I don’t like Cal. And how he lied about the teacher to his wife. Just tell her. Apologise. He clearly still loves his wife. And that’s ok. I don’t like how he didn’t fight for his. And he says this too and that he regrets not fighting for her either. He feels disgusted that he’s been sleeping around. But honestly I sort of see where he’s coming from. I just feel he should communicate this better with his wife. I hate David Lindogen. Enough said about that 😂 I think we can all agree. Jessica is whole other set of issues. Cal is naive about these sort of things and it should have been stopped before it got too far (like it does). I love Hannah and her character. And I like Jacob. I wish the story was just about them two or just about cal and Emily. As the film seems messy by having too much going on. There’s potential with both story lines and I’m gutted we couldn’t see more and develop one of these story lines. The son is a problem. It seems everyone ignores his crush and feelings for Jessica. His behaviour is Inappropriate. And he is then rewarded by Jessica at the end. She told him no. He should have respected this boundary. He crossed it MULTIPLE times. I feel that this should have been addressed better by his parents. His teacher or by Jessica’s parents. It’s not cute. It’s creepy. And it teaches wrong behaviours. I love the young daughter and I’m gutted we didn’t see a lot more of her. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/03/25 Full Review Ben S Say what you want...this is my favorite rom com of all time. Intertwined storylines that are equally heartfelt as they are hilarious. Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling play off each other incredibly well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Emmy K This is my favorite movie! It was a charming, funny heartfelt dramedy.
