Jay W I consider myself; a pretty big fan of Lupin III and I was excited for this movie. I like the English voice acting of Sonny Strait as Lupin, but don't care for the darker cell shaded animation of the late 90's Lupin movies. This is the one that fits in the window of having both the animation I love and the voice acting I love. The story is also more focused on Goemon, which is always a good choice. So, how does this one fare? It still maintains what we have come to love from the series, the humor, action and characters are all present. It is pretty good but falls short in some key moments. First off, I think they break Goemon away from the group too early on, these characters have such a fun dynamic, it is a shame when one of them is absent. Goemon's conflict with the group does not feel in line with the characters, it felt a little contrived. Second, one of the main heists takes place under water. That action set piece goes on for way too long, there isn't great suspense in it and it drags the whole story to a halt. Not helping with the movie's pacing is that it becomes a little repetitive with how often the main McGuffin is traded back and forth. The main villain doesn't seem like he stands much of a chance against the team, there is little that makes him stand out as intimidating or memorable. Kikyou, the main newcomer girl is more impactful to the story than most of the female tag-alongs, and she is an interesting character. With those negatives out of the way, it is still a solid Lupin adventure. The sets are creative, the heists are fun, and all the characters work well off of each other. It has a good balance of humor and action. We got to see a lot of Lupin, Goemon and Fujiko. We see A LOT of Fujiko. Much like the heroes themselves, some good, some bad, but usually the good outweighs the bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
