Critics Consensus

Thanks to a strong performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and smart direction from Denis Villeneuve, Enemy hits the mark as a tense, uncommonly adventurous thriller.

Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com From the opening shot of Enemy, you are trained to expect something out of the ordinary. Rated: A Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Jason Anderson Sight & Sound Gyllenhaal faces the tricky task of conveying the subtle differences of two men whose identities are thrown into flux. The result is his most nuanced performance since playing another sleuth caught out of his depth in Zodiac. Jan 9, 2015 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) Enemy has morbid elegance to spare, which should guarantee it some long-term cult prestige. Rated: 3/5 Jan 4, 2015 Full Review Paul Kanieski KSQD Community Radio Enemy is brimming with non-commercial bravado that borders on being confessional. Just as Hitchcock made manifest his voyeuristic and controlling proclivities, Villeneuve exposes his own conflicted feelings towards women and monogamy. Julian Rex M Slow, perhaps painfully so, but Enemy's heavily stylized direction and disturbing characters keep it from becoming an antagonist for the target audience... which is very small. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Wannabe. Only good thing is the last scene. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Richard W It started out so amazing ,i was absolutely loving it and even said to myself wow ,how have i not heard about this amazing and intriguing movie then the ending came ,,,and came it did far too soon and left u hanging like they just ran out of budget and said sorry u have to end it now ,,great acting Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Mason M Enemy is an amazing film. It's full of a dread that looms over everything, stunning bleak and yellow cinematography, some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a film, and phenomenal duel performances from Jake Gyllenhaal. Enemy is a haunting analysis of guilt and identify that sticks with you for days or weeks after the ending. A film that could be thought of as an hour and a half long jump scare, Enemy is a film that will be thought about and analyzed for years to come. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Audience Member Arguably Denis Villeneuve's best, 9.5/10.
