Critics Consensus

Thanks to a strong performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and smart direction from Denis Villeneuve, Enemy hits the mark as a tense, uncommonly adventurous thriller.

Gyllenhaal faces the tricky task of conveying the subtle differences of two men whose identities are thrown into flux. The result is his most nuanced performance since playing another sleuth caught out of his depth in Zodiac. Go to Full Review

Assessed on a level of tone and aesthetic, Villeneuve’s film is a stunning work. It is oppressive and unsettling, achieving Lynchian levels of discomfort and uncertainty. Go to Full Review

Enemy is brimming with non-commercial bravado that borders on being confessional. Just as Hitchcock made manifest his voyeuristic and controlling proclivities, Villeneuve exposes his own conflicted feelings towards women and monogamy. Go to Full Review

Laurian D @Laurian 6d Absolutely brilliant study of the characters and... the viewer! Those who aren't at least in their 30's yet will probably walk away frustrated, leaving poor reviews, just to find themselves revisiting this gem later. I can't imagine getting all the symbols and metaphors while being in my 20's for example. But maybe some of you will, 'cause where there's a will, there's a way 😉 See more Jessica M @Jess123 Jan 1 I took this film in a literal sense and began to get more and more confused. It kept me watching but as I was excepting what was happening I wasn’t getting the full story. As you can imagine when I got to the end I had no idea what was going on. I then looked up the plot that explained everything. So basically don’t think of this as a literal story- try to look beyond what you see. See more Shioka O Dec 7 Gyllenhaal delivered a skilful performance playing two men with subtle difference. See more Uncle R @MasterExploder Nov 27 Just wow. This movie blew me away, didn’t expect it. See more James W @brokensardine Nov 25 The symbolism in the movie is excellent. You can’t go into this movie thinking you’re getting a story. The whole thing is symbolic, but tastefully done. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Nov 18 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Read all reviews
