Critics Consensus

Thanks to a strong performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and smart direction from Denis Villeneuve, Enemy hits the mark as a tense, uncommonly adventurous thriller.

Rated: A Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Jason Anderson Sight & Sound Gyllenhaal faces the tricky task of conveying the subtle differences of two men whose identities are thrown into flux. The result is his most nuanced performance since playing another sleuth caught out of his depth in Zodiac. Jan 9, 2015 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) Enemy has morbid elegance to spare, which should guarantee it some long-term cult prestige. Rated: 3/5 Jan 4, 2015 Full Review Paul Kanieski KSQD Community Radio Enemy is brimming with non-commercial bravado that borders on being confessional. Just as Hitchcock made manifest his voyeuristic and controlling proclivities, Villeneuve exposes his own conflicted feelings towards women and monogamy. William P Seems like a good gag for a story but falls short because of the dialog. Jake Gyllenhall's flatness usually works to create a sense that what isn't normal...is, but it doesn't work here. The doubles reactions are just weird, stilted. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review LUIS LETACIO C Que filme bom, eu amei a tensão que me fez sentir Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Greg K Clever mix of weird, challenging and sunspenseful. And depressing. But the split persona theme nevertheless feels worn out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Ed M The second actor playing the evil twin is actually identical to the first. A slow-paced film with yellowish shots that honestly annoyed me from the very beginning. Especially the characters' actions and the overall story, which lacked any logical thread. One of the worst endings I’ve ever seen—completely nonsensical. It feels like they had to finish the film abruptly (ran out of money to pay the actors?). It leaves you very disappointed due to how meaningless it is. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Gabriel W The twist nobody expected or wanted. This movie tries to be something that it is not. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Benjamin H Such an absorbing, layered and intelligent movie that really nails its surrealistic filmmaking without simply feeling pretentious. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a mesmerizing dual performance, while Denis Villeneuve's direction and the storytelling is top-notch. I also really adored the minimal use of sound and the subdued score throughout, as it really made the film pretty eerie and meditative. As for flaws, the film could have been a bit longer to further expand on some of its ideas. All in all, this is a terrific movie that is perfect for film nerds like myself and one that almost requires rewatches to understand more of its meanings and metaphors. And yeah, that ending was crazy (but definitely in a good way). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
