I can only be frustrated with the movie because the majority of it works so well. The coming-of-age romcom moments had me yearning for a time when trans movies are allowed to exist without the burden of teaching.

Fanfic is a great queer movie, it’s just not a great movie, movie. But even still, this one is well worth the watch for its matter-of-fact approach to coming out, a great parent-child relationship, and a huge screw you to a terrible teacher.

this movie felt like i was watching my middle school self if he were polish and 17 years old. it hurt. it made me feel hopeful. it made me happy. it was beautiful, it was artistic; the music was appropriate, the cinematography was magnificent, the script felt real and gut-wrenching, and every little bit of it spoke to me.

The way of telling the story of the character's self-understanding as transgender is interesting. But aside from the LGBT+ aspect, it's just a story of a boy finding himself while ignoring the feelings and problems of everyone around him.
