Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times A film that plays more like a feature-length advertisement than like a documentary. You keep expecting the camera to zoom in on a packet of bacon or a box of cereal. May 8, 2014 Full Review Jesse Hassenger AV Club Farmland lets the farmers tell their stories, but doesn't see fit to shape them into anything resembling a coherent statement or narrative. Rated: C- May 8, 2014 Full Review Aaron Hillis Village Voice Perhaps if Moll offered less of the static sit-down interviews and more fly-on-the-grain vérité, viewers might feel some new, intimate connection between the farmers and the nourishment that unites us. May 6, 2014 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy Beautiful imagery of vast landscapes fill the screen from the very beginning. Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Josh Terry Deseret News (Salt Lake City) It is a refreshing look at a faraway lifestyle that embodies some overlooked American values. Nov 22, 2017 Full Review Shannon M. Houston Paste Magazine After a bit of a slow start, Farmland finishes strong as it eventually transforms into a fascinating, emotional narrative with more layers than we might have expected. Rich D Follows the story of a handful of farmers in several different states. Never goes deep in any particular issue. Definitely gives the impression of propaganda response to negative press over specific issues in farming, whether it's animal abuse, use of antibiotics, or GMOs. If you can get past the propaganda, it's an interesting surface level look at the farming lives of the handful of what I assume to be carefully selected farmers (for the movie). That is real life for some farmers. Pretending that CAFOs don't use antibiotics preventatively made it seem very inauthentic. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/22 Full Review Audience Member Great subject and characters, but the film suffers from a lack of substance. The filmmakers seemed to have no interest in agriculture and end up wasting the viewer's time. There is no information presented. The film seems to exclusively rely on putting uplifting music to scenes of farming activities. As a result, the audience comes away from the film no more knowledgeable than before. For a film attempting to build appreciation from the non-farming population, it's an abject failure. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This was shocking! I cant believe its really happening ,but great piece of journalism showing it from all sides Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review brandon w Farmland is directed by James Moll, and it's a documentary about the farmer's lifestyle of how they work, and how they come across to what they actually are. I come across this in a Agriculture class in high school, and watched it for 2 school days, which honestly wasn't that bad since I had no interest in farming. It's interesting to see what the farmers actually do instead of what we usually think that may seem like a stereotype or not. The people they put in for interviews are interesting as they know about the hard work that they do, but they don't care about it as they usually get the job done. The thing with documentary films, is that they can try to be long and be interesting, and that's fine, but it can also exceed its grasp and start to lose the viewers. This however, is no exception as the last 10 or 15 minutes were starting to bore me, and I wanted it to end. As far as farming documentary films go, this is probably as interesting as it can get from me, and I managed to really like it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review s r A worthwhile look into farming and the people behind it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice notion, but I found myself questioning claim after claim from these utopian family farmers.
