In 1970, military doctor Jeffrey McDonald (Gary Cole) reports a hideous and confusing story: A gang of hippies akin to the Manson Family broke into his North Carolina home and slaughtered his wife and two daughters, while somehow only wounding him slightly as he tried to fight them off. As McDonald continues to proclaim his innocence, his skeptical father-in-law Freddy Kassab (Karl Malden) and investigative journalist Joe McGinniss (Frank Dent) probe his story to uncover the truth.

acsdoug D I just watched this again after seeing it when it originally aired about forty years ago. It was excellent then and it is excellent now. The cast, the direction, the story, all superb. What creates the rotten fish odor in murder cases like this and the Ramsay incident is the shallow manner in which the self proclaimed innocent survivor envisions the would-be perpetrator/s. Here, MacDonald had apparently been influenced by something akin to the made-for-TV movie, Helter Skelter before emulating the literal writing on the wall. Ramsay characterized the kidnappers in the ransom note as a businessman would who is afraid of, but not very knowledgeable about being kidnapped by terrorists. Now if you'll excuse me, I must return to my search for "the real killers" of Nicole Brown Simpson...on Florida golf courses. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
