Critics Consensus

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool showcases brilliant work from Annette Bening, whose performance is more than enough to outweigh this biopic's basic narrative.

David Stratton The Australian Ultimately, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is an extremely rewarding romantic drama and should appeal even to those unfamiliar with Gloria Grahame Rated: 4/5 Mar 2, 2018 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) McGuigan's role is essentially to serve the script and the performers, and we can be grateful the project wasn't handed to a director more bent on imposing an authorial stamp. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 1, 2018 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News Bening finds the shattered beauty in Grahame, the tragedy of an ex-star hanging on for dear life to her waning looks and fame that has long since passed her by. Rated: B Feb 16, 2018 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema A beautiful film about a heartbreaking romance, one that never quite establishes the trust necessary for true love to blossom. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 9, 2021 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut The story of the love affair between former Hollywood starlet Gloria Grahame and British provincial actor Peter Turner during the closing years of Grahame's life. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Dan Buffa KSDK News (St. Louis) Bell and Bening try to ignite a fire on screen that simply never shows up. Georgan G A nearly perfect film with superb acting. While only the end of Gloria Grahame's life is portrayed, and we don't get to know her in depth, it is a well written screen play. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review iangwilliams8812 I was transfixed and could not look away wanting to see it to the end. Stellar cast that keep you engaged all the way through. Annette Bening was adorable as Gloria was in real life. Loved her hair, loved the film and watching it again tonight. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful tear-jerker. Exquisite light and cinematography! Jamie Bell is captivating! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member More like "Gloria Grahame Slowly Dies of Cancer." Fairly morbid, by the book, biopic-style production that is pretty much matter of fact, and that's it. It's boldest decision is to show the actual Gloria Grahame in film clips and TV clips while we are watching Annette Bening in the lead role in the movie. Apart from that, the movie serves little purpose. The acting is fine, but not challenging, as is the direction, cinematography, etc. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review david f The story behind this movie is fascinating but I don't know if they should have made a whole movie about it, it's more of an interesting anecdote about the surprising end of the life of an Academy Award winning actress.
