Kim P The cast provided top-notch portrayals of their characters. Duvall, Murray, Black, Spacek, McRaney, Cobb...all excellent in their telling of this unique story. And the basic Faulkneresque idea that serves as a framework for the story is original and potentially rich with humor, drama and some very moving scenes. But the film has problems with pacing, character development, and dialog. And the story loses it's way in the 2nd half of the film and starts meandering. Bill Murray did a comendable job playing a character that doesn't quite know who he's supposed to be, a cynical, comic hustler or someone desperately in need of a little success. Ditto Bill Cobbs who does the best one could hope for playing a character who's so poorly thought out he ends up being superfluous to the story. I was left wondering if there were scenes relegated to the cutting room floor that could've helped helped flesh out the story and the characters. Its based on a real life legend, apparently, so there may be some truth to it. I thought it was interesting how different people, locals in the nearby community, reacted to the hermit, Felix Bush and what we learn about him. This film has a great cast, including Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray. I'd say its a somewhat thought provoking film and one I'd happily recommend, yes. There are some amusing moments in it as well as serious aspects to it as well.
