William L "One day this shall again be a city of peace" ... but not today, let's go attack the city. Sure, Hill 24 may be the first film to originate from the new Israeli state, but does that really warrant particular esteem? In the absence of any exceptional quality or substance, that's more of a bit of obscure trivia than anything else. The film is ambitious given its multi-character storyline, but leans more toward propaganda with its simple characters (a Nazi who had to be a Nazi because of Hitler's eyes) and supposedly inspiring plotlines that demonstrate the noble cause being fought for, but there is clearly credit due to the writers for at least documenting the 1948 Arab-Israeli War as an actual struggle with tangible losses rather than simply a righteous and easily won crusade. Technically, the film shows all the capability of a film made in a newly established country previously subject to devastating conflict; namely, not great, with dodgy editing, image and sound quality. The production team also apparently had a hard time with subtitles, adding them in white without borders so that if they happen to be overlaid over a bright image they're unreadable. A historical footnote rather than a landmark film, but not without at least some ambitious features and flashes of decency. Not something that would happen today, I guess. It shows how the grasp of history can change along time and I like the movie for that. Other then that, the movie has the down sides of a very stereotypical casting, very stereotypical ideas, and some bad acting!
