Critics Consensus

Its depiction of real-life horror will strike some as exploitative, but Hotel Mumbai remains a well-made dramatization of tragic events.

Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader The movie's coda cements the overarching message of extolling heroism and the survivors' refusal to let terror define them. But that moral still rings a little hollow. Mar 24, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Hotel Mumbai is a disturbing and haunting reminder of what so many endured. Dec 3, 2019 Full Review Anupama Chopra Film Companion Anthony Maras is successful at staging the horrors of that night and the scale and extent of the tragedy is too vast to leave you unmoved. Dec 3, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies This is no sanitized account. It’s gritty and admittedly tough to watch. But it could also be one of the more authentic portrayals of its kind. It certainly left me rattled. Rated: 4/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The first great film of 2019. A visceral, pulse-pounding, frenetic docudrama held together with extraordinary technique by Maras. Imagine, a Hollywood film based on real events that depicts men and women of diversity as honest-to-God real-life heroes. Rated: 4/5 Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Tom O'Brien Next Best Picture Still, "Hotel Mumbai" marks an impressive feature debut for Maras, despite the fact that his script at times lapses into 1970s disaster movie characterizations. (You'll know them when you see them). Rated: 6/10 Jun 14, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

anna k I loved this. Is it violent? Yes, but so is the topic. I'm sure some will claim it is ''too violent'', but I say they're wrong; it's simply accurate. Dev Patel is wonderful. The movie is very engaging, and pulls you in. Only thing I don't like is the way the terrorists are portrayed as somewhat innocent, in the sense that they are portrayed in this hicks-who-don't-know-any-better way, and that is utterly ridiculous. Nobody is so stupid that they can't figure out that it's wrong to walk into a hotel and machine-gun down everyone for absolutely no reason. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Hendry L It is a movie based on the true events of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. One thing I appreciate is that this movie does not shy away from how horrific the attack was. The violence is brutal and honestly difficult to watch. The film is incredibly suspenseful, tense and gripping to watch. There is terrific acting from Dev Patel who plays a staff and Anupam Kher who plays real-life head chef Hemant Oberoi. Where the movie falters is when it focuses on the couple. Their characters make so many infuriating choices and was genuinely frustrating to watch. I wish the whole film had just focused on the Hotel staff trying to protect the guests. Despite that, this is an incredibly well-made movie and a harrowing depiction of the tragic event that is worth watching Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Gortee U This movie portrays horror, terror and confiution best and litteray make you watch till the end, maibe there's a bit too much of heroism but it's great movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Vilu S Years after seeing the film, the film still pops in my head. Five stars is an understatement. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Georgan G A tense thriller that kept me on edge for the entire movie. Especially good acting by Dev Patel as a waiter and Anupam Kher as Head Chef. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Lodaya E One of the best overlooked movie 2018, based on a true thrilling story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
