Derek Smith Slant Magazine Ultimately, Stanley Kubrick is less interested in offering a fresh dimension to a familiar story than in using its narrative scaffolding as an occasion for often thrilling aesthetic play. Jun 29, 2022 Full Review Gavin Lambert Sight & Sound The young writer-director-photographer-editor of this un-promisingly titled film has a good deal of talent. Mar 30, 2020 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine Kubrick's second feature shows his promise as a powerful and iconic director in motifs and style. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2007 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Stanley Kubrick didn’t much care for his second feature, and one can’t blame him. It’s a bit of hard-boiled juvenilia (he was 27 when it was released) with corny, ludicrous narration. Rated: C Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Kubrick considered this an inferior effort, and he was mostly right. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 11, 2022 Full Review Frank J. Avella Edge Media Network It's fascinating to watch this early feature where Kubrick was finding his visual style. One can see embryonic versions of moments that would be birthed fully in films like The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, and even A Clockwork Orange. Rated: B Jul 6, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Mason M Definitely not Kubrick's best work but a big step up from his previous film Fear and Desire, and shows how good of a noir director he would be with his next film, The Killing. The plot is nothing special but it remains an enjoyable watch due to it's stunning photography. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Audience Member A generic Noir, made by one of the most unique directors to ever live. The only real reason for anyone to watch this is because it was directed by Kubrick in all honesty. The story wasn't all that interesting, but I did like some of the choices he made when it came to telling it. Using that whole ballet sequence to undertone the sad story of Gloria's family was a nice touch. In fact that whole story was super dark, keep in mind Leave it to Beaver was almost canceled over a scene that showed a toilet. This same era, Kubrick talked about such a terrible way to die. The film also had relatively good cinematography. For example, Kubrick really captured the beauty of New York's nighttime by having the only lights come from the advertisements. It gave it a real Noir type feeling (which is good because it is a noir in case you weren't aware already). The final fight in the room with the mannequins, kind of reminded me of "A Clockwork Orange". That's really all there is to say, as everything else is pretty forgettable. Just a generic low budget noir, that is only good for folks who either love the genre, or Kubrick. 1.5/5 stars. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Connor S One of film's most impactful directors was given next to nothing to work with monetarily and managed to make a more-than-quality movie at a young age, with much more success to come his way.
