03/30/2010 without the beauty of love and dream, it'd be only justified for 4 stars even less. ps. perfect tempo all through the movie See more 03/04/2010 An impressive attempt by Gu Chang Wei, but the story is too much alike my all time favourite 'In the heat of the sun', and you will find out a touching Chinese movie is easily produced. Only you need to get a melancholic story that set in the chaotic era of PRC. See more 11/16/2009 Chinese arthouse films often resort to symbolisms to represent things too politically sensitive to be stated outright. These films also seem to have a fatalistic outlook in life, where external influence seem to overwhelm one's own choices - a reflection of not only the restrictive controls of the government, but also of one's living condition, and the extremely competitive nature of the education and employment marketplace due to the shortness in supply of them - which means no matter how smart you are, there is still quite a high chance that you won't get that job or into that university. "Peacock" has both of these elements. Set after the Cultural Revolution, it tells of a family of five with two sons, one obese and mentally handicapped, and one a sensitve, and a daughter, whose various dreams are always shuttered by circumstances. Excellent cinematography and acting, this is a film that should be on the recommended viewing list for those who love serious Chinese works. Its overly morbid and fatalistic outlook may disturb. See more 05/17/2009 solitude starts at home... See more 04/24/2009 I consider this film the closest one to my heart ever. I smell the same aroma and stinks of myself as the one from the heroine. It seems every one loves to be a peacock, wishing to spread tails magnificantly one day.But things usuallty go differently even oppositely as we expected. However, dreaming is still no wrong. Someone who dreams out of reality all her life would be of special temperament, aritistic, idealistic, self-centric...it's no good in else's eyes, but definitely no bad as a self existence. A puritan-like girl, as her, as me, as someone else, lives on her dream and frustrated on the off-dream real life. What can she do more?
