Chabrol lets the Vichy propaganda roll, intervening rarely, letting it speak for itself. He leaves it to the spectator to perceive the sordid ironies, like the display of gallant social events taking place at the Vel' d'Hiv, or the cheerful commercials for great new clothes made of human hair.
