Critics Consensus

Hugh Jackman makes the most of his final outing as Wolverine with a gritty, nuanced performance in a violent but surprisingly thoughtful superhero action film that defies genre conventions.

Matthew Rozsa Salon.com The ending of "Logan"... works in a bold and poignant way, providing the kind of closure that any story could be proud of. Rated: 4/4 Nov 8, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Logan is a melancholic paen to the Western with enough blood and gore to redefine what a comic book movie can and should be. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Jordan Hoffman Thrillist The superhero movie is a major American genre, and one that is malleable for the silly and the profound. And Logan is the most profound one yet. Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson “Logan” turns into a road movie of sorts that couples harrowing pursuit with deep ruminations on mortality and purpose not commonly seen in the comic book film genre. Rated: 5/5 Jul 20, 2025 Full Review Tom Spoors Loud and Clear Reviews James Mangold’s Logan is one of the greatest superhero films ever made, telling a tragic, mature story about one of cinema’s most iconic characters. Rated: 4/5 Jan 7, 2025 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment Logan is a must see film. The film is a finale to two of the actors that have made this series so special and while it is arguable that the story doesn’t do their characters justice Jackman and Stewart do both step up to plate Rated: 5/5 Oct 29, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/21 Full Review Donavin D Logan marks the original end of a fan-favorite character played for nearly two decades by Hugh Jackman—and what a sendoff it is. Brutally emotional, dark, and deeply human, it’s a perfect sendoff to one of Fox’s most iconic X-Men. With career-best performances from both Jackman and Patrick Stewart, Logan stands as one of the best Marvel project Fox ever released. The film drops us into a bleak future of the X-Men universe without a clear explanation on how we got there. We’re given glimpses of what happened to the world and its mutants, but the focus remains tightly on Logan, Professor X, and X-23. Jackman and Stewart play off each other beautifully, evoking a dynamic that feels like a son caring for his aging father—only for Logan to find himself in the role of a father figure as well. The action is less frequent but far more grounded and visceral, allowing Wolverine’s powers to feel raw and dangerous in a way we’ve rarely seen before. Visually, the film remains interesting and varied throughout—moving through rural countrysides, dusty deserts, and quasi-futuristic cities—all of which help ground the story in a believable, lived-in world. Even the climactic "same vs. same" fight trope I usually find underwhelming, takes an emotionally resonant swing that defines the film’s arc (and I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it). With a powerful, character-driven story, unforgettable performances from Jackman and Stewart, and just enough moments of levity to make it feel real, Logan is not just the best Marvel-Fox film—it’s one of the best superhero films ever made.
