Fun, fast paced, campy, high energy Western action adventure, Has elements that recall the best Indiana Jones movies, Loads of famous stars in supporting roles, Peck is commanding as the lead, Almost matched by the hammy Omar Shariff, Thrilling action set pieces, and stunning Monument Valley vistas, Making good use of Panavision wide screen, Thunderous sound fx of gunfire and horse hooves echoing off canyon walls,

The rating on this movie confirms that I should ignore the critics' reviews but trust the audience's rating.

Loved this movie, l remember watching it in my PJ's at the drive-in back in 1970. I bought it on dvd when it came out. I dont get modern film critics blasting a film that was made generations before their birth. It had mystique, drama, romance, adventure, a femme fatale, everything including a Spielberg-esque ride for survival scene at the end.

I saw this movie, centering around the lust for goal in the old southwest, when it was first released, as a young teen at a theater in Hollywood. I liked it just fine and even saw it again when it came to our local theater in So Cal. I saw it one more time recently on You Tube and I can safely write here that it is probably the worst version of a big Hollywood production to ever see the light of day. Not that it doesn't have some redeeming qualities that I will mention now.
The film was beautifully shot in and around the Grand Canyon when it wasn't using the studio to shoot scenes with the most inane dialogue ever, directed by the normally reliable J Lee Thompson. Despite the great outdoor locations, many scenes on horseback were shot in said studio with awful green-screen backgrounds, or whatever passed for FX in 69.
The other nice touch was to give non dialogue supporting roles to Ted Cassidy and Julie Newmar as Apaches aiding the gold seekers, even though they are attempting to loot a canyon filled with Apache gold. They are the only redeeming characters in a film crammed with top flight movie stars of the day who all compete to see who can turn in the worst performance of their careers.
I have read where this movie eventually realized a profit, gaining overseas popularity, especially in The Soviet Union, of all places. I have also read how much France goes crazy over Jerry Lewis films. The mind boggles.

Omar Sharife as a western bad boy, WTF, Not Peck's greatest movie but it isn't his fault, that's the director's fault for allowing the green screenshots to be in the final edit, they are so bad they look like comedy green screen shots of spacemen riding space scooters through cartoon land, they devalue the film and to be honest are so bad they might be the best thing in the film, worth watching just to see the really stupid looks on the faces of the actors as they pretend to ride horses when they're sitting on bar stools, this film is the worst western film since the Marx brothers went west or Laurel & hardy rode the trail of the lonesome pine, its terrible, I score this film 25% but only that high for the green screen shots which I recommend every watch and anyone making a film see so they know why green screens are not a good idea, not even with today's screens they all look fake, because they are,
