Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) is a successful real estate developer in Manhattan. He lives in a posh apartment on Park Avenue, and is on the fast track to a partnership in a prestigious company. However, his life changes radically when he receives a final gift from his late father -- a live penguin, which is soon joined by five more penguins. The birds' antics soon win over Mr. Popper, and as he bonds with the penguins, his chilly relationship with his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and kids begins to thaw.

Critics Consensus

Blandly inoffensive and thoroughly predictable, Mr. Popper's Penguins could have been worse -- but it should have been better.

It's not an awful film but, in the end, it's nothing much at all. Go to Full Review

As family entertainment for the summer holidays it isn't bad, and Britain's Ophelia Lovibond does well as Popper's perky assistant, though Carrey is fundamentally subdued. Go to Full Review

See more K G Jun 28 Some of those times where 20th Century Studios is more magic than Disney is. Here, is about a man (Jim Carrey), Thomas Popper who has been given multiple ANIMATED penguins to be more impressive to his family. Now Jim Carrey does a good role as a father who looks like he does not age like milk, he was upbeat & other people like Madeline Carrol (portraying the daughter, Janey Popper, who looked moody whenever seeing her parents, some teenagers are this way). I loved how the penguins had of their personalities, like Stinky (he farts & they stink) & how the penguins waddle like Charlie Chaplin on the TV, it is wonderful & turning his room into Antarctica & relating to the penguins. I felt to interested to possible seem like him & his ex-wife would be back together & they really did go to Antarctica to let go of the penguins. I think I am drawing comparisons to Night At the Museum (I choose Night at the Museum over this) & then comparisons to Rio with that ending.
