      Critics Consensus

Norm Macdonald's parting standup set is as dry and unconventionally hilarious as fans could have hoped, and the specter of the comedian's encroaching mortality gives his characteristically unsentimental sendoff a powerful emotional undertow.

Rafael V I enjoyed at least 80% of the jokes in the special, and I am sure the other 20% would've hit as well had the special been filmed in a theatre with live audiences. Fantastic special to commemorate the old chunk of coal, and I hope his comedic genius and legacy live on for a very, very long time.. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review StephenPaul C Ages 17 and older!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 26 minutes in memory of Norm MacDonald!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/23 Full Review Stephen C LOL, ages 17 and older!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review patrick f Norm Macdonald's final comedy special was filmed during Covid lockdown, with no audience, and while the comedian and SNL legend was fighting a secret battle against cancer. Released posthumously, the special carries an emotional weight unlike any special before it. Given the circumstances of Norm's health and the ongoing pandemic, we will never see a special like this again. The comedy set covers topics ranging from casinos, cannibalism, living wills and why you have to be ready to deal with life as it comes. The special has a rawness and realness as it was filmed in one take with the occasional interruption of a barking dog and a ringing cell phone. The last act of the special is a round table discussion of Norm and his unique sense of humor by some of Comedy's biggest stars including David Letterman, Dave Chappelle, Molly Shannon, Conan O'Brien, Adam Sandler, and David Spade. It serves as a fitting analysis of a great comedian who will be long remembered and sorely missed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review matt g My wife and I watched this last night and what can I say besides we were touched. Obviously it's hilarious (that is if you like Norm's odd brand of humor, which I always have) but it's also extremely endearing. It's a shame we lost Norm so early because by all accounts he was a very decent person and valued his personal relationships immensely. I had tears of laughter and tears of sorrow but enjoyed every second of it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I was surprisingly tearing up seconds after this started... but then was smiling and laughing just as quickly as Norm's uniquely offbeat delivery and sense of humor warmed me throughout in what turned out to be a beautifully thoughtful gift for his fans, friends, and family. There aren't many better storytellers, especially in their delivery, than Norm and being that many of my interests over the years have seemed to align with his, I have always deeply appreciated his comedy, interviews, opinions, and comments, and whether that was through the medium of movies, TV, radio, or Twitter made no difference. Thanks again Norm. 😢 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Kevin EG Perry Independent (UK) Beyond being a technically magnificent set, Nothing Special is a deeply profound and humane hour of comedy. Rated: 5/5 Jun 1, 2022 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times The late comedian delivers almost an hour of his trademark provocative humor. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 1, 2022 Full Review Kathryn VanArendonk New York Magazine/Vulture It does not stand well on its own. But in the same way Macdonald leaves space for an audience who isn’t there, the indistinctness of Nothing Special does create an opportunity to remember him. Jun 1, 2022 Full Review Kyle Smith National Review Many viewers will find that the absence of a responsive audience robs the special of its comic energy. I didn’t laugh much, but as a Norm fan, I appreciated the urgency of his valedictory words. Jun 28, 2022 Full Review Bob Grimm Reno News and Review Love ya, Norm. Rated: 4/5 Jun 7, 2022 Full Review Jesse Hassenger Consequence Norm Macdonald had a purist’s vision for comedy, that a routine or a single joke could maybe be its own small, perfect bit of craft — that it could be something worth leaving behind when you go.
