      Critics Consensus

Norman's elegantly told story is brought brilliantly to life by a quietly powerful performance from Richard Gere.

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It's a light-footed shimmy of a performance from Gere, who connects us with an unexpected dignity in the soul of this professional parasite. Rated: 3/5 Jun 11, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) I've had enough of Gere's breathtaking golden years tour de force performances. Because they're starting to look like screen-chewing. Rated: 2/5 Jun 9, 2017 Full Review Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Cedar might have built up a broader satirical thesis from all this wheeling and dealing, but he's happy to let the film rest gently on Gere's shoulders - these days, a pretty safe foundation. Rated: 3/5 Jun 8, 2017 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Norman centers on a man who, by all logic, should be too insufferable and impossible to follow. Yet thanks to Joseph Cedar's writing and Richard Gere's emoting, Norman Oppenheimer is instead a figure worthy of attention and sympathy. Rated: 3/4 Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse An in-depth look at a superficial man, a movie that works best when it focuses on Gere and not baroque political intrigue. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com A showcase for the mighty fine talents of Gere. Rated: 3.5/4.0 Sep 18, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Georgan G This is the kind of bottom-feeder person that I despise in real life, and have no interest in learning more about. Hustle the rich to get more, feel clever, &/or build a reputation? bleech... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review bill p Brilliant telling of a neurotic fixer in the NYC Jewish circle. The character is oily but somehow charming with his "I'd love to introduce you to him," always building connections that might pay off down the road, or to try to get something deal done, or because he can't help himself from doing it. The film gives the impression that he's unaware that some of what he's doing crosses ethical and legal lines. He just wants to help. Great cast, yeah, yeah, Richard Gere is terrific but Steve Buscemi as the Rabbi Blumenthal is outstanding. Bonus: great Jewish choral music in many scenes. Apaixonante... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/02/22 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was OK overall as it seemed to drag on at times with no clear direction. Great cast for the movie, but the delivery was disappointing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review vander a Here's the thing. One of the reasons the reviews are so mixed on this movie is that it does not conform to any traditional or stereotypical movie telling formula so all the way through you don't know whether you love or hate it. But the movie makers have to be applauded for its unconventionality. It's both a difficult movie to watch and a difficult movie to like. Norman is not likeable and neither is the story, and yet we as viewers are so familiar with the character and the story which maybe accounts for our uncomfortableness watching it. By the end of the movie I thought it was interesting and a bit eerie that this character had a lot in common with Richard Gere's somewhat pathetic character in An Officer and a Gentleman. Maybe there's a bit of Richard Gere in there. He's excellent by the way but the bottom line on the movie is that it's simply difficult to hold a mirror to this pathetic recognizable human quality. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member My feeling for the protagonist, Norman as a person, is somewhere between pity and disgust.
