Robin H An intriguing story which could have made a great film, but unfortunately sabotaged with a poor script which doesn't dramatise the developments enough, and tricksy direction which undermines the authenticity. One can see why Richard Gere went for it, and he gives a convincing portrayal of the central character. He must have been disappointed by the result. Pity. The character is oily but somehow charming with his "I'd love to introduce you to him," always building connections that might pay off down the road, or to try to get something deal done, or because he can't help himself from doing it. The film gives the impression that he's unaware that some of what he's doing crosses ethical and legal lines. He just wants to help. Great cast, yeah, yeah, Richard Gere is terrific but Steve Buscemi as the Rabbi Blumenthal is outstanding. Bonus: great Jewish choral music in many scenes.
