Businessman Stephen Chase (Pat O'Brien) is a rising star at the Atlantis Oil Company, which sends him to a isolated part of China, where he awaits the arrival of his fiancée. After receiving a telegram that she has called off the wedding, Stephen instead gets hitched to Hester Adams (Josephine Hutchinson). Marriage and impending fatherhood have little effect on Stephen's ambitions with the company, but the advent of communism and an outbreak of cholera force him to reexamine his priorities.
