Rachel Pronger Sight & Sound Carreira’s scrupulously low-key debut feature is primarily an exploration of the cost of unfettered consumerism, a chilling exposé disguised as social realist drama. Nov 5, 2025 Full Review Danny Leigh Financial Times The mood in On Falling is a shade of blue, precisely rendered in small gestures and fleeting moments. As Aurora drifts into ever deeper solitude, the film has the economy of a haiku. Rated: 4/5 Mar 12, 2025 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) This terrific English-language feature debut from Portuguese-born, Scotland-based director Laura Carreira makes a satisfying companion piece to Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You. Rated: 4/5 Mar 8, 2025 Full Review Laura Pérez Fotogramas [Laura Carreira] is more austere in her story, tremendously rigorous and precise in her portrayal of the human cost of our ultra-consumerist and ultra-impatient society. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Elsa Fernández-Santos El Pais (Spain) Without wallowing in her character's pain, always respecting her point of view, Carreira elegantly and without sordidness, portrays the harsh reality of a 21st-century worker. Audience Member Great movie ...which you have to sit through the mundane parts of life to find gratitude of people reaching out to you no matter how down life can get is what I got from this well made movie. Well acted and great Location. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/25 Full Review Steve J A heartrending, agonising insight into life within the 21st-century precariat, in which in reasing numbers of us are forced to live; and a beautiful, sensitive portrayal of a lost soul ekeing out an existence against the robotic meaninglessness of late-stage turbo-capitalism. Watch it if you can / dare. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Man D It was so incredibly dull. I’ve worked in places like this and they are necessary jobs and people make the most of them. I found it incredibly patronizing that the overall sense was that the job was empty and meaningless, so many people work in menial jobs like this and make the most of the job and their life outside of work. One gets the sense that Aurora would never have been happy wherever she was and perhaps it would have been a bit more interesting if we understood why she could not manage to make any connections. I’ve given it one and a half stars because the acting was good and there were some interesting shots Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Jeremy S A slice of modern life.... so depressing.. Amazon picker...broke... getting by just... mostly lonely ... I wanted to be there to save her. I can't imagine many people are going to love this. But somehow it's made and acted in a way that kept me engaged throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Cinephile B It's a disturbing film, about the miserable lives and jobs of many people. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Cristina B The people who made and acted in this film deserve applause for tackling a difficult and timely subject with grace. The way in which women specifically experience poverty is insightfully portrayed. But the experience of watching the film feels like a bit of a meal (ironic given the many scenes about lack of food). The main character is a little 2-dimensional, as I suppose befits the depression of her character, but she doesn't seem to have much of a backstory. We see her come out of her shell a little bit during a job interview and when trying on makeup, which was in my view the best scene in the film as it contrasted the heroine's suffering with our the rest of society's expectations and one which felt actually cinematic. I found it a relief after the film, which is a painfully homogenous series of shots of the warehouse, does not actually build or change pace much relying on the viewer's cringe and fearful imagination through very subtle cues. While it may be the most realistic plotline, I disliked the lack of any resolution to the situation, and final scene, which felt very hokey and leaned too much on music.
