Roger G Patrice, Gary, and their friends are exception people to deliver such an important message to people who wouldn't know the struggles that most disabled people struggle with. I've never been able to understand why the government restricts their rights to basic services, just for wanting to get married and/ or live together. This documentary is a poignant and artistic approach to such an i.portant topic. Unfortunately, although the notion at the heart of this situation is captivating, the facts are wildly skewed. Moreover, they are presented as common situations. Contrary to how some have described the film as angled toward Marriage equality, that is not at all what is at the core of the policies and procedures that led to those decisions. Some have cited how Patrice's friend Elizabeth Dicker described the situation - she asked rhetorically - how does it hurt the government if members in a couple each has Medicaid is married or not? The underlying notion being that it does not change if they need doctor care or not. However, this is a completely wrong statement and unrelated to SSI benefits. There is no issue with both of them having Medicaid. The movie maker should be careful to not present this story as factual. It could incorrectly and inappropriately stir the masses against an innocent government entity - SSA. It also incorrectly indicates that the rule is solely the result of outdated ideas for disabled couples. That is untrue. Whether it is agreed upon or not, it is critical that an alleged documentary present actual facts and accurate representations. For instance, because SSI represents General Tax dollars used to fund a "needs based program," it behooves the government to be good stewards with our money. When it is believed that there is "presumed sharing" such as that inherently involved in a cohabitating couple. This does not apply to married people living separately. It has nothing to do with marriage in itself only simple basic understanding of finance. In fact, a couple that is "holding out" (from marriage) or not officially married but (effectively) living as a married couple and perhaps even presenting themselves to the community as a married couple, would still be regarded in the same manner - a Couple for SSI purposes. Simply put, it is more expensive to live separately. Living together sharing a room, sharing a bed, sharing utilities, sharing food, sharing rent means fewer costs and thus fewer funds needed. Additionally, the program that is funded from General tax dollars was not intended to result in much "savings." A simple taxpayer might ask, why should I work and pay for you to "save" up to $3,000 or $10,000 when I am living paycheck to paycheck? The real question is how do we as society balance the wishes of a person like Patrice with how much taxpayers can afford to fund. In other words, what lifestyle is an acceptable for the government to fund for a person that did not work (contribute taxes) enough to qualify for SSA Disability and instead is only eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) aka welfare style benefits? In summary, the movie Patrice misinforms the public, misrepresents a situation as common when it is not. Most SSI recipients are grateful, abide by the rules and are not greedy.
