      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Paul, Apostle of Christ proves a well-intentioned yet disappointingly diffuse interpretation of a Bible story whose flashes of potential never come close to living up to the source material.

Victor B Hands down, one of the best movies i have ever seen, great acting and the most important message. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review SkyRo P Bible movies and Christian based films are already a hit or miss Sadly this movie took a miss and was not clearly enjoyable the way it was intended Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Ricardo Vagner M Inspirador. Único e atual. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review James W A good, yet, mostly fictional portrayal of the final days of St. Paul of Tarsus (James Faulkner). St. Luke (Jim Caviezel) comes to Rome during Nero's persecution of Christians to be with Paul who is being held in prison awaiting execution. Meanwhile the Christian community in Rome led by Aquila and Priscilla (John Lynch and Joanne Whalley) are trying to help their fellow Christians during the time of persecution. The prefect of the prison (Oliver Martinez) has some sympathy for Paul because he realizes Paul is being brought up on trumped up charges by Nero because the emperor is blaming the Christians for the fire that nearly destroyed Rome even though they had nothing to do with it. The prefect's daughter is gravely ill causing tensions at home. Luke decides to tell Paul's story so people will have an account of his life after he dies. The script could've been stronger in spots, but it was compelling, nevertheless. The acting, directing, cinematography, set design, costume design, and film locals (the movie was filmed in Malta) are all top notch. Despite it being a faith based film there are no miracles portrayed in this film. Paul, Luke, and the other Christians being persecuted have to rely on their faith even when everything seems hopeless. In real life almost every Christian who has ever lived has had to rely on their faith in hard times, not always has hard as what's portrayed in this film, but hard no less. Justin Chang Los Angeles Times A somber, moving portrait of one of the early church's most significant figures, who led the way at a time when Christians were being burned alive in the streets of Rome, or condemned to death in the arena. Jun 14, 2018 Full Review Bilge Ebiri Village Voice Largely devoid of sensationalism, a film that delves quietly into substantive issues of belief and forgiveness. Mar 27, 2018 Full Review Inkoo Kang TheWrap Fails to fully develop the stakes at hand, but it features more thoughtful world-building than most faith-based films, as well as a bracing honesty about the difficulty of reconciling idealistic credos with a harsh and unforgiving world. Mar 23, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There is something about its quietness that works with the story being told. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Approaches its story from a theology more familiar to those of the Catholic faith. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 19, 2020 Full Review Rhodé Marshall City Press (South Africa) You can expect some violence and disturbing imagery, though nothing that will have you on the edge of your seat. But you won't have any tear-jerking moments in this somewhat disappointing film. Apr 15, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
