Audience Member Wish this show would have lasted Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member This serie inestigates and shows what today since the 70's sport is, but I actually didn't liked this serie. its power is so little because of the cast and the interpretations from the actors... Still a great try! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member PLAYMAKERS (TV SHOW)-This was the first scripted programming ESPN about a fictional pro football team named "The Cougars" it had the best charactor is played by Omar Gooding (which i just found out 7 seconts ago the brother of Cuba Gooding JR) as a drug addicted rookie running back named Demetrius "DH" Taylor Omar who i'm sure was inspired by Terrel Owens and theres also and old running back Leon Taylor played by Russell Hornsby, whos starting job has been taken from him from DH. Theres a middle linebaker Eric Olcyzk pb Jason Mathew Smith. A coach with cancer Coach George (Tony Denison), A fat offencive linemen Kelvin "Buffalo" James (Marcello Thedford he did a few episodes of E.R. back when it didn't suck) a horn dog QB, a not big OL, a WR with a secret and on one episode with speciel guest star Snoop Dee Oh Double Gee. Snoop was great fo shor fizzile (could help my self) but any way its 13 episodes only lasted one season because the NFL was pissed. The show is based around a fictional NFL team and to show the viewers what goes on in professional football, or better yet the NFL. The show touches on homosexuality, drug use, prostitution, teammate rivalries, and other everyday topics. The main characters are Demetrius Harris (Omar Gooding) and Leon Taylor (Russell Hornsby) who are locked into a battle of who is the better running back. Harris is the hot headed rookie on the team that the owner feels deserves to the be the starter while Taylor is the experienced veteran who has been regulated to the bench. This feud escalates to numerous fights and off field battles between Coach George (Anthony John Denison) and the Owner Mr. Willbanks (Bruce Gray). Harris when not on the field is locked into a serious cocaine addiction which results in him getting high before the game and ultimately getting high during the game. Other team members are Eric Olcyzk (Jason Matthew Smith) who deals with the inner demons of paralyzing a former player, Kelvin James ( Marcello Thedford) who is faced with being obese and facing numerous health conditions if he continues to play football, Derek McConnell (Christopher Wiehl) who is the teams QB who takes numerous painkillers just so he can stand but is the ladies man who ends up with a different lady every episode, you can call McConnell the pimp of the team, Thad Guerwitcz who has to deal with being gay, and Coach George who himself is faced with dealing with cancer and coaching a winning team. The controversy with the show is that it shows drug use, shows homosexuality, prostitution, domestic violence, teammate rivalries and other things that the NFL does not want the public to know about. Even though the show is based on a fictional team and fictional players, the topics that they deal with are real which scared the NFL because they want to keep what they feel is a squeaky clean image, but in reality they are far from a squeaky clean image. The majority of the NFL brass and players are glad that the show is cancelled because they claim that the show inaccurately portrays the NFL in a negative light. But there are some NFL players who claim that the topics that the show covered are true but the show pushes them to the limits of almost being overblown. Since ESPN made the show they were stuck in between keeping the show or keeping the NFL. ESPN wanted to keep the show, but they realized that without the NFL, they would be nothing and would go into financial hardship. The NFL overblew this show because they looked too deep into what the show was telling the viewers. Even before I watched this show, I knew the troubles that were going on in the NFL because they were broadcasted all over the news, so the show did not bring up anything new. It just showed how these things go down in football. The NFL wants to keep these things below the surface because they want people to think that nothing like this could go on within their ranks. The NFL and their players need to admit that these things go on and just move on because the public already knows that this goes down. The NFL is hiding nothing, the only thing that they are hiding is the truth. Playmakers should be taken as it is and do not look deep into the meaning because there is no meaning. The NFL just needs to quit worrying about this show and just worry about what is going on within their ranks. Hopefully this show will be picked up by Showtime or a channel that doesn’t need the NFL to survive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
