Critics Consensus

The rebooted Red Dawn lacks the original's topicality, but at least pays tribute in delivering the same short shrift to character development and general logic.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk It's hardly worth the wait. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This has to be the year's most pointless remake: a boring and badly acted reboot of John Milius's gung-ho red-scare actioner from 1984. Rated: 1/5 Mar 14, 2013 Full Review Adam Lee Davies Little White Lies With any luck this will be the spanner that finally jams up the works of Hollywood's dangerously overcranked '80s remake Wurlitzer. Rated: 1/5 Mar 14, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Filled with corny speeches and uncharismatic performances, there’s not one iota of dynamism to this dull action fodder. Rated: 1/4 Sep 21, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Throughout the movie you’ll find huge gaps in logic, glaring plot holes, and numerous moments where all you can do is bury your face in your hands. Rated: 1/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com With its over-hyped bravado, laughably machismo dialogue, and stilted performances, the film often feels like a high school acting class Rated: 2.0/4.0 Sep 21, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

William D. This is quite possibly the worst movie I have even seen. The acting is atrocious. The plot and writing did nothing to help and the directing was quite possibly the worst of all three. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Hughe J Red Dawn the remake was released in theatres in 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth as Jed and a bunch of other actors whose names I don't remember. The film is based on the classic of the same name released in 1984 during the height of the cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union. I saw that movie in theatres and while it hasn't aged well over the years it was excellent at the time. This new version has the North Korean Army invading the continental United States. Oh boy. The US has the largest and most modern navy and air force in the world while North Korea has older and smaller coastal ships and virtually no transport aircraft; suspension of disbelief indeed. Anyway it was supposed to be China invading the US but the producers wanted to release it there so changed the aggressor to N Korea, which made the movie even dumber. The acting was bad, the plot was bad, the action was bad, the film was bad. Skip this remake and go watch the original again. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/28/25 Full Review Colton D I don’t care what anyone else says I love this movie good action good speeches it’s not ment to be realistic as it’s unrealistic that the us would ever be invaded in the first place it’s ment to be entertaining an that it is Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/25 Full Review DanTheMan 2 A remake of Red Dawn could have worked; that's what hurts the most. Still, it all ends up being utterly frustrating, given that it's late post-production changes to switch the aggressors from China to North Korea in order to gain access to the Chinese box office, which this film ultimately failed to do. It is a foolish, ill-considered undertaking, too confused and too muddled to be either a love-letter to the militia movement or an indictment of putting guns in the hands of kids, and without any specific point of view or focus to its storytelling, it just doesn't work. A straightforward action fare that never asks any questions beyond where the next round of ammunition is coming from, the film is filled with corny speeches and uncharismatic, stilted performances by a cast who are more than capable of so much better; there's not one iota of dynamism to this dull action fodder. It's as impotent as Milius' original was ballsy, and despite a brief running time and passable action, it ends up a frustratingly pointless experience. At best, Red Dawn is the cinematic equivalent of a voting-day robocall to people vulnerable to nail-biting, apocalyptic paranoia. The doltish, messy and frequently incoherent result bears all the hallmarks of a botched and compromised endeavour. Even as a fantasy-actioner, it's too cartoonish to embrace and too dangerous to indulge. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review John S Somehow this remake managed to be more unrealistic and less entertaining than the original Red Dawn. While the action sequences were good for the most part, most of the movie made no sense and mind numbingly dull. The characters were so unlikeable that we found ourselves rooting for the North Koreans. The characters were unremarkable and had no development thought the movie, people died and we found ourselves not knowing who and why we should care. Who is greg, who is robert, who is matty, and who died when they bombed their shelter. The over the top writing and unhinged characters in the original red dawn managed to be better then this dull piece of trash. Watch only if you want to spend 2 hours in an earthly purgatory you have been warned Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Paul S I haven't seen the original, so I can't say for certain if this is a good retelling of the story. What I can say is that while this movie isn't a masterpiece, and there a lot of flaws in its story, it was really enjoyable and fun to watch, and its story was really intense and compelling nonetheless. I definitely recommend it for action fans! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
