Critics Consensus

The rebooted Red Dawn lacks the original's topicality, but at least pays tribute in delivering the same short shrift to character development and general logic.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk It's hardly worth the wait. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Rated: 2/5 Mar 15, 2013 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This has to be the year's most pointless remake: a boring and badly acted reboot of John Milius's gung-ho red-scare actioner from 1984. Rated: 1/5 Mar 14, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Filled with corny speeches and uncharismatic performances, there’s not one iota of dynamism to this dull action fodder. Fiery P Most of these "reviews" if you can call it that are people shitting on it because it's different from the original...duh it's a remake? If you like the original so much go watch that instead. They don't watch the movie to have fun or for entertainment but instead to find anything to criticize it on. Learn to enjoy a movie...it's sad Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Stephen K All of us enjoyed the movie. Even though it is 12 years old, it was cool seeing many current TV stars that are a part of various hit TV shows together in one film when they were younger. The whole movie it was "Hey that's so and so from that show" I'd watch it again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Ken W Absolute trash movie. 🤦‍♂️ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Frederick W Pretty bad movie for Chris Hemsworth. I really like the actor but this is one movie I wish he never took. 15 seconds of fame for the cast and they glorying that it was something they did outstanding but that’s about it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Benjamin A Movie was very entertaining, shows what can happen if we as Americans are "asleep at the wheel". Not as good as the original, but there is still plenty of expense and emotion. Also, some funny parts. My favorite when they run into the subway and get all the food. I recommend seeing this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Jack G Heartless, soulless, and brainless, this version of Red Dawn lacks a reason to exist when we already have the original. The movie tries to update the story for "Modern Audiences" with references to Call of Duty, product placements, and updating the invading army from Russia to the North Koreans, but these "updates" drag the film down and date it even more than the original. When it isn't adding new material, it is recreating the original beat for beat. Well, as close as it can with it's PG-13 rating. Sure the original is also rated PG-13, but the amount of blood is way higher in that film compared to this one. It really made you feel the impact of this invasion and the horror of it all. This film has none of it and goes out of its way to hide it, even when a scene is focused around it just to avoid a potential R rating. The impact of the original has been lost in translation. Also, while this film will hit the same beats of the original, the execution is done in a less intelligent way than the original. It is almost as if they knew that they need scene X, so they copied scene X without knowing why it was there in the first place. This happens a lot when it comes to the guerilla warfare aspect of the film. There is just no logic to how they adapted those scenes from the original. There is also no care put to the action sequences in this film either. The shakey cam and fast edits obscures the action and makes it hard to tell what is going on a good amount of the time. They also try to make the action set pieces more over the top than the original, which misses the point of the original. It doesn't feel like this could happen to you and what that situation would be like. It feels like a big Hollywood blockbuster that most people will forget about in 10 years time. The cast ranges from serviceable at best, to mostly forgettable, to cringe worthy at worst. There are also strange choice through out the cast where characters are suppose to be related to one another, but you would never be able to tell based on who they casted in the roles. Overall, this movie is a watered down version of the original and another example of a classic movie from past that didn't need to be remade.
