      Critics Consensus

The rebooted Red Dawn lacks the original's topicality, but at least pays tribute in delivering the same short shrift to character development and general logic. Read critic reviews

When North Korean troops invade U.S. soil and take over the city of Spokane, Wash., a recently returned Iraq War veteran (Chris Hemsworth) and a group of teens (Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson) flee to the woods and form a band of freedom fighters. Dubbing themselves the Wolverines, the youths launch guerrilla attacks against the invaders -- but how long they can sustain the fight in the face of the enemy's superior numbers and firepower remains in question.

Who are these children, what are their relationships with one another and why did they go from frightened civilians to dedicated (and trained) guerrilla soldiers over the course of one montage with no development character or otherwise? Genuinely though, Red Dawn (2012) is a lot better than I was expecting, and I can honestly say I think I like the role of the adult US soldiers in this one more than I did in the original. Still a bit of a 'why bother ?' though. Maybe a TV series for the next reboot?

I watched this more out of curiosity over the plot since the premise was interesting to me. However, let's start by saying that the personal conflict between the characters is silly and unimaginative. The main plot is not much better since the movie doesn't really explain how North Koreans could ever feasibly invade a country by dropping down in parachutes from the sky. And these kids train and form a guerrilla in a manner way to fast and incomprehensible in the limited 90 minute run-time this movie brings us. But then having the ludicrous and poorly written dialogue go on any longer wouldn't have been advisable.

Honestly not nearly as bad as I've been told. I'll be the first to admit that there's a lot wrong with this film--a lot of the younger actors aren't so great (though Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chris Hemsworth and awesome as usual). This film is way too short as well, and the problem is that it cuts the sequences showing how the characters develop from high school teens into freedom fighters, opting instead for the use of montage. Some of the characters are less memorable than in the original, but others make up for it to some extent. I like the more optimistic ending--true, a bunch of the characters die in this movie, but pretty much everybody bought it in the original. I think only two people were left out of like a dozen at the end of the original. So not as good as the original, but still worth checking out.

Best thing about this was Chris Hemsworth! The plot seemed a little thin.
