Critics Consensus

Shakespeare's classic romance gets a so-so adaptation that's short on passion and energy.

This Romeo and Juliet is set on its disappointing course, and it can't be deterred. What a bummer. Go to Full Review

Carlei's film is beautiful but sterile, and seems nervous its audience will be bored to the extent that there seem to be more sword fights than usual. Only Paul Giamatti's touching turn as the Friar stays in the mind when this passionless film is over. Go to Full Review

Despite their superior work elsewhere, Steinfeld and Booth make for a tepid match, unlike the lovers, played by Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, at the heart of Franco Zeffirelli's definitive 1968 version. Go to Full Review

With well over 150 adaptations and imaginations of what is perhaps Shakespeare's most famous, and definitely most adapted, work on screen, director Carlo Carlei's new Romeo & Juliet is, in a word, masterful. Go to Full Review

Nevaeh M @Nemiller Dec 17 Very cringy, bad acting, no chemistry. Maybe this is not my type of vibe for a movie, but even a blind man can see this movie is NOT it See more Brad @Ilovemovies506 Dec 5 🙏💀bruh the story is great but HEAR ME OUT tybalt be looking good 😏😏😏😏 🥲I did cry tho because this is a great movie and I love the lesson it gives us. See more Daniel V Apr 28 Cinematically appealing. Stunning scenery. Beautifully filmed. Some of the language is updated to make it more accessible for students, while leaving the significant soliloquies in their original words. The music is both charming and haunting, matching the scene's context. For teachers, the lack of nudity is incredibly helpful for classroom use. Students prefer this version to Franco's masterpiece. The star imagery hidden in plain sight adds nuance to the scenes. See more Blu B Apr 28 It's ok on it's own but compared to other adaptations of the play it's inferior in almost all aspects if not everyone of them honestly. First off the acting is just ok. The two leads just don't have much chemistry, it feels like there delivering their lines in a modern way and not in the classical style needed for something like this. they also jsut don't have that much chemistry either. Booth as Romeo is so forgettable it's not funny. He has no charisma at all. Compare that to someone like DiCaprio from 96' who had so much charisma, energy, and understanding of what he was saying. This just feels like their reading the lines. Not feeling them but heck who am I to judge, I find the plays words flowerly myself. Giamatti & Lewis are decent and probably the best things in this. Especailly Giamatti. The music..isn't bad but it can be very forgettable, blending in, and just doesn't really do much. Sometimes it works but most of the time it's just there. The cinematography which has a few nice shots here and there is jsut alright too. Since the acting isn't anything special you'd expect there is something to make up for it visually with so much on location scenes. And...ehh...it's not terrible but the direction is so basic and uninspired lots of times. The editing isn't bad and this isn't incoherent or anything like it's edited like a Tony Scott film. But sometimes especially in the first half it cuts around a bit too much it feels like for no reason and it's a bit distracting. Again there is nothing broken here but everything is so medicore it just hums along the entire way. I struggle to find a reason beyond steinfeld being in this why people new to the bard or fans of his work would choose this over other adaptations. Skip This. See more Corinne P Mar 16 it’s a insanely terrible movie, when i wash his movie in class the emotions that I felt was embarrassment that I was watching such a terrible movie, dreadful for everyone else watching a movie, The amount of cringe I got from this. whoever made this movie needs to get fired, including the bad actors See more Kaylee S Mar 14 this movie was so bad, I would never watch it again it would be way better if the actors knew how to act and if the story plot didn't make any since See more Read all reviews
