Arrays of prostitutes are found slain throughout the local forest. Three men, Bull, Gennai, and Horo, feel they must do something to protect the women. However, as they get closer to finding out who is in the clan they are compelled to remove themselves from the situation. When a girl they all love, Oshin, is kidnapped by the clan, they must sacrifice their own lives for hers. “Women shouldn’t meddle in the affairs of men.” Kazuo Kuroki, director of Pickpocket, A Boy’s Summer in 1945, and Silence has No Wings, delivers Ronin-Gai. Ronin Gai possesses an uninspiring story. The film takes too long to get to the meat of the plot. There is a strong attempt to build up the main characters, like most samurai pictures; however, Kuroki over did it. The actors portrayed the characters well, and executed the limited action to perfection. “If you kill me, I’ll be glad to die.” Gennai giving the bull “something,” Horo’s song during the fight between Gennai and the bull, the “I’ll do it standing up” reference, the bird raising conversation, the testing of the sword on the corpse scene, the writing lessons, the “stupid officers” reference, the paying to get the job story, Osen’s death scene, the village trading the girl for rice story, the selling sister plan, the surrounding and slaying of the hooker in the woods, the “act like a dog” scene, the cutting hair scene, the “smelled like bird shit” reference, Gennai coming to Oshin’s rescue, Horo coming to help Gennai, the reloading sword scenes, and Bull’s finish were amongst the better portions of the film. “There’s a moth in the fire.” The ending of this film is fantastic. While watching the film I almost couldn’t wait for it to end; when the conclusion came my eyes burst open. The end seemed to be the director’s primary vision, his masterpiece. It was almost like he built the film around his marvelous perception of the ending. Nevertheless, the build-up to the ending was an utter disappointment. “She’s a gem amongst pebbles.” Grade: C Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
